A2 Monday January 22 2001 The Spectrum LOCALSTATE Dixie State College yearbook dropped possibly for good DSC Yearbook History The earliest Dixie State College (DSC) yearbook was published in 1913 judging from library archives The 1913 yearbook was published in an 8 by 11 inch for mat It was known as 'The Dixie" Diirinn the voarc 1Q17 1Q1Q 1920 1922 1926 1927 commence ment issues were published simul taneously with yearbooks some times the commencement issues took the place of yearbooks In 1913 the book was published through associated students of the St George Stake Academy when the LDS Church briefly owned the college DSC library archives do not con tain yearbooks for the years 1911 1912 1918 or 1933 It is assumed no books were published for those years rom 1964 to 1994 the yearbook 7 was known as "The Confederate" rom 1994 to 2000 the yearbook was known simply as the "Dixie By ANGIE PARKINSON angiepthespectrumcom ST GEORGE The students have spoken By their own design Dixie State College (DSC) stu dents will not take a yearbook home at the end of this semester According to Associate Dean of Arts Letters and Sciences Louise Excell the yearbook There was not any one specific death knell according to Excell Enthusiasm has steadily decreased over the years One key indicator was the num ber of students who showed for their yearbook photos Of the more than 6000 students currently enrolled only 300 showed up to have their photos taken this year despite an extensive advertising campaign Excell said another key factor was the declining enrollment in the yearbook class This year fac ulty had to actively recruit journal ism students for the yearbook class About 10 students were in the class during the all 2000 semester College officials can celed the class for the Spring 2001 semester only had a handful of stu dents this said Excell Laurie Scholzen student Editor for the 1995 and 1996 editions said she is sad to hear of the year demise sad (to hear it) but not said Scholzen Scholzen attended DSC on a scholarship for yearbook editing She called her experience with the yearbook Scholzen said even in her years as editor it was difficult to drum up popularity for the yearbook but she feels the end justified the means always a place for yearbook because always a place to record she said or not students buy it that history is Scholzen said she hopes the DSC yearbook will continue in some format Student Executive Council President Wendi Prince confirmed that will be the case at least for this year Student officers have commissioned production of a video yearbook Prince said her organization has already designated the $30000 tn student fees normally allocated toward the yearbook for other uses A large portion ($12000) will toward the resurrection of the college radio station KDSC: $5000 will go toward the Dixie Sun newspaper $4000 will go toward a 2000 2001 video year book and $1150 will be used to College Yearbook" Yearbook pages have ranged from 48 during 1944 and 1945 to 224 pages in 1968 In 1987 a 3Z page historical sec tion was included in the yearbook to commemorate Dixie College's 75th Diamond Jubilee No yearbook will be produced for the 2000 2001 school year Yearbook history courtesy of Loren Webb former yearbook advisor create a new student directory The rest of the funds will go toward the purchase of an electronic marquee to be installed in front of the library Prince said students will be polled in (he coming weeks to decide whether or not they want to fund the yearbook next year Students may decide to get rid of the $450 studentyearbook fee altogether they may decide to use it for something else or they may want the yearbook back A CD Rom yearbook an online yearbook or a semester year bookmagazine are some options student officers are considering Prince said although she will fight for the wishes of her con stituency she would prefer to get rid of the yearbook just seems like more of a high school she said put the money where people could use College yearbooks are rare Only 94 are currently registered nationwide with the Associated Collegiate Press Dan Watson editor of in 1942 said although he is sad to hear of the demise he is not surprised the end of an said Watson generation thinks very differently from the previous SPRINGIELD DECOR ATED MODEL Enter our weekly drawing for free dinner for two! 265 Dixie Drive Cose to Sunbrook Golf Course 9 Custom loor Plans rom low $120's Open 10:00 AM 6:00 PM Daily Closed Sunday Marriages Washington County January 2 John Robert Reed and Kai Allen Smith of Salt Lake City January 3 Armando Michael Muro and Cristen Rasmussen of St George January 5 Scott Samuel Lee of St George and Kassie Shae Pectol of Washington January 13 Desmond Aolaolagi Meredith and Bonita Christensen of St George Gary Wesley Stokes and Julia Marie Pugmire of Apple Valley Got a news tip?
