Local State 4CThursday, June 15, 2000 Zanesville Times Recorder Police say man enjoyed tormenting families Former policeman, son accused of smuggling cocaine that freed them from scrutiny. was left early Wednesday at the airline's corporate headquarters in Dallas. FBI aent Stephen Vogt said in an affidavit that Gilbert and the other airline employee brought cocaine to Cleveland for the Walshes by stashing it in their carry-on luggage. Vogt did not say what the men did for the airline or whether they were granted special access Vogt wrote that a source told officers that the elder Walsh has funneled drugs to northeast Ohio for years. Robert Walsh worked as a Cleveland police officer from 1950 to 1956.

Four years later, he was convicted of counterfeiting. The Walshes lived in Northridge, but also had an apartment in Lakewood, a Cleveland suburb, Vogt said. CLEVE1.AND (AP) A former city police officer and his son are accused of smuggling cocaine from Ixs Angeles to Cleveland with the help of two American Airlines employees, federal prosecutors said. Robert Walsh, 70, and his son, Robert 28, are charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine for allegedly arranging for the shipment of several pounds of cocaine that was then delivered to a Euclid man. Robert Walsh Jr.

and Ryan Prendergast, 28, of Euclid, appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Patricia Hemann, who scheduled a bond hearing for next week. The elder Walsh was arrested Monday and is in California, as was John Gilbert, 31, of Ing Beach, one of the two airline employees. Prosecutors would not say whether the other employee has been charged. A message seeking comment Screenings HAMILTON (AP) A man who kept track of traffic deaths, missing persons and other news-making tragedies took pleasure in telephoning the victims' relatives to claim he had new information about the cases, police said.

Larry Mullins, S3, of Hamilton, is to be arraigned Thursday in a misdemeanor court in Oxford on a charge of telephone harassment. If convicted, lie could be sentenced to six months in jail and fined $1,000. "He knew what he was doing was wrong," Maj. Anthony Dwyer of the Butler County sheriff's office said Wednesday. "He indicated he did take some pleasure from being able to call people, being anonymous, the feeling that he got from that.

"It's really kind of bizarre," Dwyer said. Mullins kept journals that are filled with handwritten daily entries spanning years, and some have pockets stuffed with newspaper clippings, Dwyer said. Mullins would call families on the anniversary of a personal tragedy to claim that he had new information, police said. The investigation started May 15, when a family reported receiving an answering-machine message from a man who said he needed to talk to a 13-year-old girl whose mother had been killed in a car wreck in 1990. I Ie is charged in one case, but may have made 100 or more such calls to various people in the past few years, investigators said.

Sheriff's officers received more calls Wednesday from other people complaining that they had received similar calls. Police suspect that Mullins may be behind those calls, Dwyer said. "Daily, he would write in the journals. And daily, he would go back 10 years, 20 years, 30 years and review what he wrote on that day years before. That would spawn the thought of calling these people," Dwyer said.

Mullins could not be located Wednesday to comment on the allegations. He is unemployed and has been living with relatives, Dwyer said. The family who made the May 15 report later told authorities that they recognized the man's voice on a television broadcast about a case in Clermont County's Miami Township of a woman, Karen Spencer, who has been missing since Dec. 30, 1989. In February, an unidentified male had called a suburban Cincinnati family and left an answering-machine message stating that he knew where Spencer was buried.

The message was meant for Spencer's relatives but reached the wrong family, police said. Miami Township police said they have found no reason to believe that Mullins had anything to do with the disappearance of Spencer, who was 18 when she vanished. Mullins has been charged with obstructing official business, a misdemeanor, for interfering with the police investigation of the Spencer case, Miami Township police said. Becker said the ODH is aware of the screening potentials and the needs of newborns and are very sensitive to this issue. The GDI I also has the utmost faith in the advisory committee, which meets several times during the year to make recommendations. "We care about public health," he said. "Our advisory board is one of our most invaluable resources. It is made up of physicians, pediatricians and other professionals who are on the front line daily caring for newborns and we greatly respect their recommendations and will be expanding the screening program under their guidelines." There is no law on the books that forbids parents to opt for expanded screening, however the cost, which is $20 to $25 per test according to Neo Gen, would have to be absorbed by the parents.

To tour the ODH facilities or for more information about any public health issue including genetic screening for newborns call 1-888-ODH-LABS. 'W Local pediatrician Dr. Gerald Tiberio understands the cost benefit per ratio issue at hand, and thinks the additional screenings are worth the effort if the cost can be kept within reason. "Although these metabolic disorders are very rare if it were your child who happened to be the one with a disorder you would wish he or she had been screened at birth," Tiberio said. "I lowever, like anything else, cost is a factor when considering screenings and tests.

For example, there were about six to eight cases of children a year who were developing polio from the oral polio vaccine. Because of those six to eight cases a year we now give hundreds of thousands of shots each year to prevent those six to eight cases. In this scenario the yield was very low but if your child had been one of those six to eight cases then it would've been very worth it regardless of cost to you. I think the more screening the better but cost does have to be considered," Tiberio continued. Two disorders currently screened for are hypothyroid and l'KU.

According to Tiberio, his office sees many cases of 4 days only if 0 f.r 6 99r 44c 4655 final price pair, after 10 Uk gold earrings.
