390 Page A4 THE SPECTRUM LOCAL STATE Saturday, October 4, 1997 NASA boosts X-33 landings By The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY Space agency officials have increased the number of landings in Utah of the experimental, remote-controlled $1.15 billion X-33 space plane. National Aeronautic and Space Administration scientists had initially planned for seven landings of the half-size supersonic glider. which if successful may be the successor to the space shuttle. Now, that number likely will be increased to 10. The 63-foot-tall X-33 will blast off vertically from Edwards Air Force Base, powered by liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

It won't have a crew and won't fly into space. It will climb 50 miles high and fly at speeds up to 15 times the speed of sound before gliding to an unpowered landing. ympathy Flowers A tribute to the ones they loved. NASA had been looking at three landing sites, but eliminated landings at Silurian Lake, said Rebecca McCaleb, director of environmental engineering and management at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. McCaleb is head of the team that analyzed the proposal. That change added three landings to Dugway, a remote Army proving ground 80 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The plan does not recommend changing the five landings planned for Malmstrom Air Force LOCAL NEWS IN BRIEF ST. A formal decision on the EIS recommendations won't be made until next month. The wedge-shaped X-33 is being built under a cooperative agreement between NASA and Lockheed Martin Skunk Works of Palmdale. with NASA investing $941 million and Lockheed Martin at least $212. If X-33 succeeds, the full-scale project, a vehicle named Venture Star, should be built by Lockheed Martin within a decade. The Venture Star, designed as a "reusable launch vehicle," could replace the shuttle and would slash the cost of lifting cargo into space from $10,000 to roughly $1,000 per pound.

HURRICANE Water tests are clean despite discoloration Hurricane water tested negative for bacteria last week. The water in Hurricane turned an odd color after the remnants of Hurricane Nora caused flash floods, said Kevin Brown, Utah Division of Drinking Water director. The floods put sediment, which is not a health hazard, into the city's springs and caused the water discoloration, Brown said.

"It's one of those freak accidents," Brown said. City officials alerted radio stations, which broadcast a warning against drinking the discolored water. The warning was retracted a short time later after the bacteria tests came up negative.
