Lumberjacks cut down Birds 55-13 Sports The Dally Spectrum Sunday, September 4, 1988 Page 81 Rebels off to quick start, win big Gila Monsters endangered species in 44-0 romp from SUSC's 24. A pass from Carter to tight end Ron Clement for 11 yards and 17 more yards on three carries by Minefee put the ball at the Lumberjacks' 13. From there the T-Birds' top returning rusher. Thane Marshall, took a pitch from Carter and swept into the end zone with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter. However, the glory of the moment was dampened when Herkey Marxen's extra point kick hit the goal post and was no good, leaving NAU with a commanding 38-6 lead.

Northern Arizona scored on Micky Penaflor's second 42-yard field goal of the game to push its lead to 41-7. The T-Birds answered with another long drive featuring a 32-yard pass from Carter to wide receiver Dave Becerra. Passes to Clement and Marshall, and some short runs moved the ball to the NAU 4. Minefee scored his first touchdown as a Thunderbird on a sweep around the left end after taking a pitch from Carter. Marxen added the extra point and it was 41-13 with 2:08 left in the third quarter.

Minefee had 129 yards rushing on 24 carries to account for a good share of SUSC's 315 yards total offense. The offense was hurt by two pass interceptions and two lost fumbles. Poor field position throughout the game also put the Cedar City crew at a disadvantage. Northern Arizona racked up 548 yards on 304 rushing and 244 passing. The T-Birds' poor tackling aided NAU's total offense, according to Bishop.

Quarterback Greg Wyatt set two career school passing records in the game as he completed 14 of 22 for 191 yards. Another potent weapon for the Lumberjacks' offense was running by Chris J. Miller Staff writer THATCHER, Ariz. The Dixie Rebels burst out of the gates of the 1988 Western States Football League (WSFL), scoring on four of their first five possessions en route to a convincing 44-0 victory over the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters Saturday in the league opener for both squads. Rebel quarterback Brook Buhrley threw for two touchdowns and di-t rected a potent offensive attack that rolled over the stunned Gila Mona-ters.

Running back Shane Tafoya led a host of running backs who saw considerable action as Dixie rolled to a 27-0 lead and never looked back, giving all members of the squad playing time in the second half. "I'm very happy with the win, the shutout, everything. I can't say there were too many things that went 'wrong tonight. It's a good stepping stone for us going into the season. It really was a good opener.

But we need to build on it," said Rebel Head Coach Greg Croshaw following the shutout Three quarterbacks saw action in the contest, and although Croshaw feels Buhrley will probably continue as the starter in next week's game against Arizona Western, he was pleased with the play of backups Ka'iana Kapele and Scott Garrett. "Brook did a good job, but I tell you what, I'd still feel comforatble with Garrett or Kapele if he (Buhrley) stubbed his toe," Croshaw said. scalp Seminoles 31-0 Croshaw listed outstanding performances from the receiving corps and defensive secondary as surprising, but felt there were many outstanding efforts from his squad. "You want to get through the first game in good shape and we did that. But what impressed me was our intensity.

We made some mistakes, but we also made some awfully big plays," added Croshaw. With the win the Rebels picked up their 10th consecutive victory, just four short of a school record fourteen consecutive wins. The 1-0 Rebels own the best record in the history of the WSFL with a 20-5 record, while the 0-1 Gila Monsters have yet to win a conference game in three years. The Rebels forced a turnover just 35 second into the ball game as defensive tackle Jon Baker recovered a Eastern Arizona fumble at the Gila Monster 43-yard line. After the fumble Dixie struck quickly, as Teddy James plunged over from one yard out to cap a six play scoring drive.

The extra point attempt was wide, as Dixie led 6-0. After failing to score followng a Parker Ragsdale interception on the second series, the Rebels put together three impressive scoring drives of 66, 98 and 58 yards to out-distance the Gila Monsters. Tafoya bowled over from three yards out with 1:46 remaining the first quarter, with Frank Lemon adding the extra point. On the next series. Greg Stokes scored on a 12-yard draw play early in the second quarter for another Dixie touchdown.

The Rebels scored on the opening drive of the third quarter, when Buhrley and Daryl Davis combined on a 35-yard scoring play at the 12:59 mark. Lemon added the extra point. Lemon added a 36-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter and defensive back Nate Hansen ran back a' 47-yard interception for a touchdown for the final Rebel score.

The Rebel defense, led by linebacker Howard Reeve, completely dominated the Gila Monsters throughout much of the game. In the second half, Eastern Arizona had several good scoring opportunities but Sid Smith and Ragsdale led the Rebel effort in preserving the shutout. felt like the defense would be one of our strengths this year and tonight's game certainly bore that out, said Croshwaw. "It was a great team effort on defense." James, who started and looked good in the early going, left the game midway through the second quarter with bruises on the bottom of his feet. According to Croshaw, the problem is a new one, and concerns the staff because James has looked good when able to perform.

Gaining revenge for an embarrassing loss two seasons ago, the Northern Arizona University football team methodically disposed of Southern Utah State College 55-13 in the opening game of the season for both schools Saturday night in the Walkup Sky Dome. The Lumberjacks, picked to finish high in the Big Sky Conference standings this season, scored on four consecutive possessions after getting their first touchdown recovering a fumble in the end zone in the first quarter.

From then on it was certain they were serious about avenging the 27-17 loss to SUSC in 1986. Going into the game, Southern Utah State Head Coach Jack Bishop thought his team had a chance to make it two in a row over NAU. But after watching in disappointment as the Lumberjacks rolled up the score, he said, "We would have to play at a much higher level than we did tonight to beat them again. There were some things that went well, but there were a lot of things that didn't." One of the biggest shocks, he continued, was the poor play of the special teams. The T-Birds had two punts blocked, others that only carried a short distance, and missed an extra point.

The SUSC option offense was another weakness. "Early in the game, we didn't do anything to put pressure on the NAU defense," Bishop said. Rick Carter took over at quarterback for Brad Matthews at the end of the first half, and then, with the help of tailback Kelvin Minefee, got the offense moving in the third quarter. The T-Birds scored on two consecutive drives in the period. Minefee sparked the first drive with a 36-yard run on the first play Hurricanes The Miami Hurricanes showed they will be a tough team to overtake as national champion Saturday, opening the defense of their title with a 31-0 victory over top-ranked Florida State.

The triumph by fifth-ranked Miami will quickly send the national rankings into a scramble. Third- rated Nebraska and No. i Clemson built massive halftime leads Saturday en route to crushing victories on the college football season's first full weekend. No. 2 Oklahoma was idle.

"It's too early to worry about the rankings," Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson said. It wasn't too early for Johnson's Hurricanes to look like an elite team. At Miami, Steve Walsh threw two touchdown passes and Miami forced six turnovers and shut down Florida" State's heralded offensive attack. Miami, which lost 13 starters and both kickers from last year's 12-0 team, intercepted five passes and recovered one of three Florida State fumbles. Miami garnered its 33rd straight regular-season victory.

The Hurricanes are 6-0 in the 1980s against top-ranked teams. Miami has beaten Florida State four consecutive games. The Hurricanes completely dominated the game, holding Heisman Trophy hopeful Sammie Smith to 6 yards on 10 carries and chasing starting quarterback Chip Ferguson from the game in the third quarter. Ferguson completed 10 of 16 passes for 121 yards with two interceptions before leaving in favor of Peter Tom Willis. Walsh completed 18 of 37 passes for 235 yards.

Ryan, 10-11, walked two and struck out eight to boost his National League-leading strikeout total to 204. Ryan extended his own major legue record for 200-strikeout seasons to 12.

Larry McWilliams, 4-6, was the loser. ATLANTA (UPI) The game between the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates was rained out and re-scheduled as part of a double-header Sunday. MONTREAL (UPI) -Nelson San-tovenia hit his second homer of the game, a two-run blast in the 13th inning that carried the Montreal Expos to a 6-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Marlowe is one of three team members not coached by Karolyi. Also training in Houston for the first time are Hope Spivey of Parkettes in Allentown, and Kelly Garrison-Steves of the University of Oklahoma.

Team members coached by Karolyi are 1988 national champion Phoebe Mills, Brandy Johnson and Chelle Stack. The team's two alternates, Rhonda Faehn and Kristie Phillips, also are coached by Karolyi, the former Romanian who was mentor to Olympic medalists Nadia Comaneci and, following his defection to the United States, Mary Lou Retton. "Everyone is bonding together and working together," said Garrison-Steves. "We're rooting and pulling for each other. This is a team effort, and that's the way we're looking at it.

No one individual sticks out." Only two csaches will be allowed on the floor during the competition in Seoul. While no official decision has been made, Rocky Mountain Gymnastics Coach Mark Lee said he believed the two would be Karolyi and Becky Buwick, who coaches Garrison-Steves. back Lavon Worley who carried the ball 14 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Neither team could move consistently early in the game, due in part to a rash of penalties, and they exchanged punts. Southern Utah State took the ball after a punt on its own 12.

Four plays later, quarterback Brad Matthews was grabbed near the goal line and stripped of the ball. It fell in the end zone and was recovered by linebacker Pete Jonovich for a touchdown. Penaflor's first of seven extra-point kicks made it 7-0 midway through the first quarter. That opened the gates for three more touchdowns and a field goal which gave the Lumberjacks a 31-0 lead at the half. Charles Matthews scored on a 14-yard run up the middle to put NAU up 14-0 in the first quarter.

Then Wyatt capped a long drive with a 34-yard touchdown pass to tight end Erin Motes early in the second quarter. Penaflor's first field goal, set up by NAU's first blocked punt, made it 24-0. Then Matthews wrapped up a short drive with a 2-yard dive into the end zone to complete the first half scoring with 3:42 left. Worley scored early in the second half on a 16-yard run right after NAU blocked a punt. Later in the quarter, Worley scored again on a 10-yard run.

The final touchdown of the game came with just over a minute left to play when David Lang scored from 1 yard out at the end of a 55-yard drive. The T-Birds will be on the road again next Saturday when they play Angelo State University, the 10th ranked team in NCAA Division II polls, at San Angelo, Texas.
