NATIONAL 6 A Monday, September 18, 2006 1 Tri-StateReport 'Mist Researcher, 74, works in N. J. woodlands Lindbergh estate, site of the kidnapping of the 20-month-old son of Charles A. Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The land she studies was preserved in part because neighbors became interested in the data she collected about the 69 species of birds that breed here, with51 more migrating through.

Years from now, when a mist-netter captures a bird the Hopewell group banded in its first year, its sex will be recorded, and with more and more data to compute and analyze, more codes can be cracked. When she started studying the birds on Featherbed Lane, the woods were hayf ields. The next field over is the former used by groups including the nonprofit Institute of Bird Studies, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the University of California, Los Angeles. An hour after the net lanes are set up, a dozen cotton bags are hanging from a wooden frame on a picnic table in the middle of the woods.

Some flop and rock back and forth, some squawk occasionally. Suthers' seven assistants are working intently, putting leg bands on catbirds, a common yellowthroat, cardinals and a Carolina wren. They are measuring feathers, recording band numbers, swabbing, and plucking two feathers from each bird, for a study that traces migratory routes, based on soil isotopes that appear in a bird's diet and hence in its feathers. Holding a cardinal's head between her index and middle fingers, cradling the body in her palm, she parts the breast feathers to check for fat. A songbird's skin is translucent, and those who have stocked up for migration or molting have a yellow bean-size pellet of fat under their wishbones.

Pushing aside the feathers on the bird's head, she can tell how old it is, based on skull development The 20 or 30 birds caught each Sunday breed locally, and most of them are young. Their parents have gone to feed elsewhere, leaving behind more foodforthenextgeneration. Suthers' data has helped birders tell the difference between male and female catbirds, previously thought to be an impossible task outside of the breeding season. "We cracked the code for second-year and older birds," she said. "It took around 24 years to get enough data for the first part." Now they are measuring the ratio between longest and shortest wing feathers on birds less than a year old, and looking at other possible sex-specific traits like changes in eye color.

a black tangle of is it a billowing skein of spider web? a witch's wig? no, nylon netting. She hooks the end onto the next pole, and neatly shakes out a nearly invisible "mist net," about 6 feet tall and 40 feet long. There are 32 nets to hang among the red maple and white ash trees. Birds cannot see them when they fly across the paths. With a few helpers, Suthers, a retired Princeton research assistant, is capturing birds that breed in these Mercer County woods and recording their age, sex, size, weight, condition, even the color of their eyes and tongues.

She bands them, then releases them unharmed. With decades of data, Suthers and hundreds of volunteer researchers like her around the country have helped answer questions like which bird favors which berry, how to tell male and female birds apart, and, this year, what flu viruses are found in wild birds. Hannah Slithers, 74, is flying up the path into the young woods, carrying canvas bags, trying to beat the birds.

She isn't striding, her steps aren't particularly quick, but she is somehow making excellent time. As she has every seasonable Sunday morning for the past 28 years, Suthers reaches a line of thin poles along a path. She takes five hooks off the handle of one of her bags, and attaches them, in careful order, to one pole. Then she strides towards the next, playing out behind her 30 Year Fixed Rate Home Equity Loans Save $500 To $4,000 In Monthly Payments Call For A Free "Debt Analysis" Make Home Improvements WE HAVE GOOD NEWS FOR YOU! "No running until you get to the grass," called several Westchester Fairfield Hebrew Academy third-and fourth-grade teachers as they let their charges out into last Wednesday's perfect September afternoon. The children ignored them, but it will probably be some time before anyone gets angry or gets over the fact that, for the first time in the decade-old Jewish day school's history, there is a seemingly endless amount of grass to run to. After years of renting space from Temple Sholom, Greenwich's first Jewish day school bought its permanent home at 270 Lake Ave. from the Japa- The new campus has allowed the school to expand both its size and its scope, while also serving as a flagship of the area's growing Jewish community- "Acquiring a campus is symbolic of our permanence," said Nora Anderson, head of school.

The school has been adding a grade a year up to eighth grade, and will now begin to add a second class of each grade, starting with kindergarten this year. Enrollment jumped from 108 last year to 130 this year, and Anderson said administrators plan to cap it at 325, with two nese Education Alliance two months ago. A week into its first school year on the 17-acre campus; founded a century ago by the Choate family as the Rosemary Hall School for girls, the adults on campus seem no less giddy than the students. "It's hard to believe that we're really here," said Marc Schul-man, chairman of the board, as kindergartners swarmed around him in the lunchroom lit by stately, arched floor-to-ceil-ing windows. Schulman helped open the school in 1997 with 24 students in rented space in Port Chester.
