Ryan, who said he threw fast SMU WM Exciting Sophomon alls 70 to 80 per cent of the me, opened the game at by walking Tommy arper on four pitches. He then ruck out Doug Griffin before art Fastrzemski singlfed to ght. While Ryan has boosted his record to 11-5, Vida Blue, last sensation with Oakland, struggling along at 2-5.

By AYDEN FRY SMrtherA Mettodist University Written For UPI DALLAS Based on spring training, I'm excited about SMU's prospects for the 1972 football season. We have a few weak areas that need smoothing out, but overall we will have some size, speed and talent on the Mustang team this fan. This will be one of the young est teams I've had at SMU. Nineteen of our top 33 players on offense and 18 of the top 33 on defense will be sophomores. But they arc quality sophomores and many of them will be starting for us next season.

There are several freshmen who could also help us next season. We had one of the best recruiting years last year that I've ever had, and many of thes? voung men will be able to contribute to the varsity. We will have a wide open and potentially explosive offense next year. Sophomore Casey Ortez emerged as our No. 1 quarterback In the spring, after leading his team to a 55 14 win in our final spring game.

Sophomore John Blackburn and jun- GhHS Match Stl, Chair Has Arrivad REYKJAVIK, Iceland (UPI Boris Spassky-Bobby Fischer world chess match can favorite chair has arrived. The swivel chair in metal and black leather was flown from New York to Iceland and put on the stage In the Reykjavik chess hall Sunday. Spassky's Russian advisers arrived shortly after the much talked about chair and studied if suspiciously. Then they left without comment. Now the Icelandic organizers face a new problem: Where to find a similar chair in Iceland? "It would look better if both Spassky and Fischer had the same chairs," said Gudmundur Thorarinsson, president of the Icelandic Chess Federation.

Spassky, the 35-year-old world champion, did not seem to worry much about details of the $250,000 match. Basaball Queens Sal Far Crowning The Sandy Koufax League will crown its queen at 8 p.m. Friday night and the i Mantle League will crown its queen Wednesday night. Both ceremonies will be held between ttw doubleheaders schedule. In Sunday's Clovls News-Journal Sports section, the Sandy Koufax Baseball League queen candidates appeared.

Donna Crook, the Gophers queen candidate was not present when tht photo was taken and her name was omitted. or Keith Bobo will battle Casey for the No. 1 quarterback lonors next fall. Our running back situation will be very solid. Alvin Maxson, who was all Southwest Conference, sophomore of the year and leading rusher in the conference, will return.

Junior T. J. Hutchinson, who pushw Alvin all spring for the to halfback position, will figure great deal in our offensiv plans. Rayford Clark, Denni Howell and sophomore Barrel McCullough give us good powe at fullback. Overall this is the most size and depth I've had in the back field, We have a great deal of po tential at our receiver positions Three of our split ends, Joe and Pouncy and Rufus Shaw, hav been timed in 9.4 in the 100 yard dash.

Raymond Mapp and James Lee Robinson hav good speed and could go all th way. Randy Goss, at flanker, one of the most reliable receiv ers I've ever been associate! with. I feel that it Is just a mat tcr of time until we develop a outstanding corps of receiver next fall. The offensive line is one area of concern. Twelve of our top 18 offensive linemen are sopho mores.

Kelly Arnold and Deweber at tackles and Tom Black at guard are our voter ans. Defensively we should be so Id. In fact, we will have to de pend on the defense early in th year until our young offensiv team has had time to gal some game experience. Our strength in the defense lines in the linebacker DOS tions and the secondary. Ou three starters at linebacker ar seniors and behind them are tw other upper classmen.

Jim Ryan at strong lineback er, Leonard Carey in the mid die, and Mack Rogers at weak side linebacker give us strengt and mobility at this position. In the secondary we hav three starters back. Free safe ty Robert Popclka is in opinion one of the best defen slve backs in the country Strong safety Andy Duvall an cornerback Kris Silverthorn also return to give us the nu cleus for a fine defensive back field. The defensive front four wil be young, but will be the big gest group I've ever had a SMU. is possible that fou will start at th down linemen portions.

The development of our offen sive line and quarterback pos lion is essential In early fa practice. I am very Impresse with the overall enthusiasm an attitude of this squad. It is young team that will Improv with experience and I am con fident that the '72 Mustangs wi be an exciting and entertainln team.
