Philip Morrison, one of the inventors of the atomic bomb and an early leader in the search for intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, has died. He was 89. Dr.

Morrison, a professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, died in his sleep at his home April 22, the university announced Monday. "Phil was a great physicist," said Marc Kastner, chairman of the physics department at MIT. "He was spectacular at explaining physics to the public, too." Dr. Morrison was the host of The Ring of Truth, a six-part series aired by PBS, and a book review editor for the magazine Scientific American. Garnsey Garnsey, James Berton, 81, of Pompano Beach passed away in his sleep Saturday, April 23, 2005, Born in Clayton (Grindstone Island), NY, Jim was a boat captain by trade who in the late 1930s followed the sun to South Florida for winter fishing returning to the Thousand Islands (Clayton, NY) in the summers to operate his fishing guide service on the St. Lawrence River.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and in 1946 met and married Gloria Marie Pitre of Gouverneur, NY. They moved to Pompano Beach permanently in 1949 where he captained fishing boats up and down the East Coast, South Florida, Florida Keys, and the Bahamas until his retirement in the late 1980' S. Since then he and Gloria traveled the United States and Canada, and devoted most of their time to family rarely missing any of their grandchildren's sports or school functions. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone he touched, and most certainly will be missed by all.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Gloria; three children, James Jr. (Marianne) of Pompano Beach, Allen (Pam) of Boca Raton, and Sherri Marie Gluth (Jeff) of Pompano Beach; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother Gerald Garnsey (Sue) of Margate; sisters, Elizabeth Davis of Pompano Beach and Patricia Link (Paul) of Clayton, NY; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many very good friends.
