"If we exclude 10 percent on the far-right and far-left, we find that (Christians) are not far apard. We do have a common ground of agreement from which to act." The directors of church-sponsored crisis pregnancy centers described how their centers have provided counseling and alternatives to women seeking abortion. "(Abortion) has devastated the lives of women and those around them," Jane Delany, director of a Texas-based crisis pregnancy center, said.

Despite what most Americans believe, Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court case permitting abortion, allows for abortions during the entire nine months, of pregnancy, attorney Susie Hoeller said. States increasing regulate abortions with each successive trimester, but even at the end of the term, "the mother still has the right to an abortion on the grounds of her health," she said. However, Christians are not unanimous in their views on abotions, Terry ackowledged, particularly regarding exceptions to an outright prohibition against abortion.

"Christians who think theologically and act in the best interest of their faith do disagree," he said. "Disputants on both sides use the Bible. "(Christians) stagger under the revelation that millions of women choose to abort their babies every year," Paul Loper a national missionary for Southern Baptist medical missions. "(Those numbers) represent only the tip of the iceberg." Abortion is fueld by widespread promiscuity prevalent in today's society, he said. "It is here that our numbers quit giving adequate insight into our fimes," he said.

"They (numbers) tell us eloquently of the massive quanity of the sexual problems, yet they fail miserably to tell us the why of the problem," Loper said. Nearly 55 million abortions are performed yearly worldwide and ao-but 1.5 milion abortions will be conducted in the United States this year, he said. "We cannot treat it (abortion) as an isolated phenomenon separate from teenage pregnancy or AIDS or the giant lack of sex education in our homes and churches," he said. NASHVILLE (BP) More than 150 partipants from 19 states at a two-day Christian Life Commission conference on abortion explored ways to work together in combating abortion and in working with the millions of people involved in the issue. Participants heard eight addresses that explored biblical texts related to abortion, traced the history of the issue from the time of early ianity to the present and challenged Christians to become active in the pro-life movement. The CLC is a Southern Baptist commission. There were workshops on preaching on the sanctity of human life, educating children about sex, establishing crisis pregnancy centers, working through public policy, caring for women facing crisis pregnancies and supporting state homes for children.

"The Bible begins by introducing God who is creator of life and the maker of mankind in his own image," Bob Terry, editor of the Baptist newsletter Word and Way. "If God's natire is the giver of life, to refuse the gift is to strike at the heart of God. Abortion is the refusal to accept God's gift of life. Bible views life as beginning at conception," he said. "Godwas at work in the creative process.

While it is true that no verse in the New Testament explicity prohibits abortion, the direction of the New Testament as a book of life is clear.
