Margarito Origel recently finished serving time in prison for participating in the beating death Megan Mendez, whose body was found buried in Origel's back yard in 2000. A Stanislaus County judge has assigned Origel a defense attorney to help him fight extradition to Mexico.

He pleaded no contest to child endangerment in November 2002 and was sentenced to six years in prison. He was released early for good behavior. His wife, Josephine Origel, 50, pleaded no contest to murder and child abuse resulting in death, and was sentenced to 25 years-to-life in prison.

The court now must decide if Origel was properly advised that a felony conviction could make him subject to deportation. The case is set to return to court on April 21.
