GEORGE, UTAH 84770 673-1600 One of the reasons those of us in this business like it most of the time is the occasional opportunity to work on a breaking news story.

For me that happened Wednesday when I heard from several people that the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce had hired its new executive director. When I checked on these tips, Chamber officials confirmed the rumor, but weren't sure when they would have a formal announcement. With newspaper deadlines being what they are, the formal announcement story will be on the front page tomorrow. But, I'll share the leaks now.

The new Chamber exec is a female small business owner from Elko, Nev. Her first name is Lori, but since she introduced herself to organization of more than 2.800 companies that sell, service and repair industrial motors, generators, transformers, controls and related electro-mechanical equipment. Active members of the organization must meet rigid standards of excellence and adhere to a professional code of business ethics. NevStar Gaming and Entertainment of Las Vegas is planning to develop a major shopping and entertainment complex on 14 acres adjacent to its Mesquite Star Hotel Casino in Mesquite, Nev. No word yet on what attractions may go in or when ground could be broken for the project.

The local office will specialize in the design and manufacture of 3-D rendering engines, the specialized software that draws simulated three-dimensional images on a computer monitor or TV screen.

The company has been named by Entrepreneur magazine as one of "America's 50 Hottest New Small Businesses." Saffire develops games for major distributors like Nintendo, Electronic Arts, G.T. Interactive and Midway. Among its 1998 releases were Rampage, James Bond 007 and Starcraft: Brood Wars Expansion. Southwest Sales, Service and Pumps of St. George has been elected an active member of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association Inc.

The association, with headquarters in St. Louis, is an international mm. for Caesars gambling empire City, N.J., and Lake Tahoe, and the Desert Inn hotel-casino in Las Vegas. Published reports earlier said that Park Place, which owns the Hilton, Bally's and Grand casino chains, had been the leading contender to acquire the Caesars properties. Officials at Mirage, which opened the $1.6 billion Bellagio hotel-casino next to Caesars Palace in October, did not return phone calls seeking comment.
