Five sets of parents and children are isolated on a lush island in the South Pacific, where they engage in a series of competitions, taped during three weeks last fall. Every three days (or two episodes), one underachieving family is sent packing. The last one left gets to keep the beachfront villa, which cost $250,000 in the South Pacific and would go for at least 10 times that in South Florida.

The families establish themselves as characters so selfish and quarrelsome the audience couldn't be blamed for rooting that the place burns down before any of them gets to enjoy it. The initial contretemps is a product of basic math. The home has only four bedrooms. At best, this means one family is going to be shut out of comfortable sleeping quarters. However, the producers exacerbate the shortfall.

Each family, equipped with a Palm Pilot-like device, is dropped 1 kilometer from the destination. The first ones to work their way to the home get to pick as many bedrooms as they like. This isn't the only reason why viewers may be turned off by the entire field. A South Pacific vacation isn't tough duty, especially since Under One Roof, unlike Survivor, doesn't subject its contestants to undue hardships. There is no TV or radio, but otherwise the beachfront villa has most modern amenities and nobody has to eat bugs. A substantial amount of food is provided and the players will be able to bargain with the natives for whatever they need beyond that.
