Because of the eyebrows, everyone is angry at someone or about something, and nobody lets go of the anger. That gives Alvin an edge, power and control.

Only Larryboy, apparently, can make things right. not fighting crime, the hero is Larry the Cucumber, the humble janitor at The Daily Rumble, the local newspaper. BY SCOTT BLAKEY VIDEO CORRESPONDENT With sly nods to comic book characters of the 1930s and the so-called golden age of animation, the studio that served up VeggieTales debuts Episode One this month of a new series starring its all-around hero, Larryboy. Larryboy made his first VT appearance in 1997 and became a star with two videos: Larryboy The Fib From Outer Space and Larryboy and the Rumor Weed. This latest outing is something of a breakthrough in reverse for the producers that pioneered the first computer-generated animation about a bunch of talking-singing vegetables on a direct-to-video cassette in 1993. There were some startled looks as well, when Big Ideas announced that VeggieTales were Christian tapes with themes promoting "Sunday Morning Values (through) Saturday Morning Fun" a tradition carried on in the new series. The Christian angle pretty well limited itself to the universal Golden Rule and with the exception of a line of scripture at the close of each video, VeggieTales turned out to be a very funny, innovative and quality product with straight-forward, if subtle messages. Creator Phil Vischer earned many awards and big, big bucks.

Well, here we go. Bumbly-burg and its vegetable voters are lucky: they have their very own crime-fighter. That, of course, would be Larryboy. Crime seems an unlikely happenstance in a town where everyone is nice, well-behaved and mild-mannered most of the time. But it is something of a magnet, too, for really bad dudes.

And Awful Alvin is one of them. Alvin has bad teeth and dreams of power. This wretch has socked peaceable Bumblyburg citizens with a dreadful plague: Unlike Batman's belt of trirW tools, or Superman's ray vision, Larryboy relies on his ears.
