(San photo by Bob Arnold) Butz Welcomes Food Costs Hearings Injured Man, 58, Held In City Jail For -Eight Hours A 53-year-old man charged with public drunkenness spent eight hours in city jail early this morning before being taken by cab for treatment of what appeared to be a dislocated shoulder.

Lenard Reid, 58, of 113 Wells Alley, lay on the floor of the witness room at City Court this morning for an hour, writhing in pain, while court officials de cided what to do about him. Reid was picked up at 12:10 a.m. on a public drunkenness charge, police said. He appar ently had fallen and injured his shoulder before he was arrest ed, according to police, but was placed in jail anyway. When he was brought to City Court for an appearance before Judge Walter Baker Harris, he was allowed to lie on the witness room floor, adjoining the court room, to ease his pain.

When Judge Harris was notified of Reid's situation, he ordered court personnel to get help, but that help was an hour in coming. Reid's son, Ray mond, came to the court and a cab was called. The cab arrived at 10:05 a.m. to take Reid to medical help. Records on the disposition of the public drunkenness charge against the 58-year-old man said simply "Released." Theft At Cab Firm Charged To Man Police charged a 20-year-old Jackson man just before midnight Thursday with the Mar.

20 larceny of a chain hoist from a local cab company, Chief Harvey Marcom said. William Henry Reid, 20, of 707 E. Chester, was released on bond this morning following his arraignment on the petit larceny charge. He is accused of taking the chain hoist from the People's Cab Company, 420 Sycamore, on Mar. 20, Marcom said.

City Judge Walter Baker Harris set Reid's preliminary hearing for April 19. Farmers, he said, understand work, production and "the importance of giving a day's work for a day's wages." "Too many in our country today, who walk off their jobs, or walk off the Pay Board, or demand that the pay guidelines be ignored, are trying to get more out of the goose that lays the golden eggs," Butz said. Sen. Herman Talmadge of Georgia told the group that the American farmer should be held blameless for raising food prices. Sears ceived by farmers over the past 20 years for his products showed a decline of .5 per cent "Ever more significant is the fact that total farm productmg expenses increased 92.3 per cent, indicating the severity of the cost price squeeze that plagues farmers today." He called it "incredible" that the avearge American farmer would be "denied his fair share of the national income and then be castigated and blamed for the rising cost of food in a peri od of rampant inflation. He said tha instead of at tacking the American farmer, his economic situation should be improved. Talmadge suggested the ru ral development is the answer to the problem. Gerald T.

(AP) Sec retary of Agriculture Earl L. Butz said today he welcomes a decision by the Price Commis sion to hold hearings April on retail food costs as an op portunity to let the public know about farmers. "If farmers were to blame for what's happening to retail food prices, I might be running for cover, Butz said. "Instead, I'm gomg to stand and tell the truth about farmers and about farmers' productivity per man-hour, which is 3.3 times more than it was 20 years ago twice as fast a rate of growth as in manufacturing industries." Butz comments were a speech prepared for a state Ag ricultural Stabilization and Con servation Service meeting here The Price Commission will begin a hearing April 12 on re tail food costs, including probes into price spreads between farmers and consumer. "The issue that confronts America is bigger than food prices or farm prices," liutz said.
