That conviction came through to me as loud and clear as the sonic-boom blasts from Johnny's guitar during several interviews I had with various band members in the 1980s and '90s and as I watched while the band perform in Allentown (at the old Americus hotel and Airport Music Hall) and Philadelphia.

Just how loud were those sonic blasts? Consider this: During the band's first visit to Allentown in the late 1970s part of a memorable eardrum-wrecking weekend that included a plaster-cracking gig by The Damned the night before a little-remembered Boston band called La Peste was the opening act. La Peste had released an interesting single, "Better Off Dead." After their show I attempted an interview in a bar fairly far removed from the ballroom where the Ramones were to play. The conversation ended with the Ramones' trademark intro, "1-2-3-4." La Peste members and I could no longer hear each other, even though we tried shouting at the top of our lungs into one another's ears. It was easier and more enter home. Ramone, who had been fighting a five-year battle with prostate cancer, died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, said the band's longtime artistic director Arturo Vega.
