Johnny Ramone changed that by demanding more money for performances, but still kept a close watch on the band's budget; Vega recalled how Johnny Ramone would insist that the band drive nonstop between Boston and New York for shows instead of spending the night in a hotel. The guitarist was also politically conservative the late Ronald Reagan was Ramone's favorite president, Vega said.

Fans remained loyal to the Ramones, and the Ramones have been loyal to their fans. ByLenRighi Of The Morning Call The Ramones were a proud family of misfits, and any misfit who shared their love of vintage rock 'n' roll and wily sense of humor could be a member of the extended family. That conviction came through to me as loud and clear as the sonic-boom blasts from Johnny's guitar during several interviews I had with various band members in the 1980s and '90s and as I watched while the band perform in Allentown (at the old Americus hotel and Airport Music Hall) and Philadelphia.

Just how loud were those sonic blasts? Consider this: During the band's first visit to Allentown in the late 1970s part of a memorable eardrum-wrecking weekend that included a plaster-cracking gig by The Damned the night before a little-remembered Boston band called La Peste was the opening act. La Peste had released an interesting single, "Better Off Dead." After their show I attempted an interview in a bar fairly far removed from the ballroom where the Ramones were to play. The conversation ended with the Ramones' trademark intro, "1-2-3-4." La Peste members and I could no longer hear each other, even though we tried shouting at the top of our lungs into one another's ears. It was easier and more enter home. But that us-against-the-world solidarity projected by the Ramones had hidden cracks, many of which are brought to light in a new documentary, "The Ramones: End of the Century." The film was released Aug.

20 but has yet to play in the Lehigh Valley region. "I honestly believe that they lived to hate each other," Jim Fields, co-director of the film, told the New York Daily News. "Fans don't know what hell they were to be with," the movie's other director, Michael Gramaglia, added. Johnny Ramone, commenting on his own quotes in the movie, told the newspaper, "I usually toned it down. I would say, We didn't get but not say how difficult it was." Of course, Johnny and Joey barely spoke to each other over the last 20 years after Joey's girlfriend, Linda, left him for Johnny, whom she married.

The estrangement was so great, Johnny didn't visit Joey when he got cancer. The guitarist said he felt it would have been hypocritical to do so. The Daily News quotes Johnny as saying that while Linda's change of heart "factored in, the problems started and continued for other reasons. We had different ideas of what the band should be doing." NOW Chris T.Nguyen Of The Associated Press LOS ANGELES Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band "The Ramones" that influenced a generation of rockers, has died. He was 55. Ramone, who had been fighting a five-year battle with prostate cancer, died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, said the band's longtime artistic director Arturo Vega. "He was the guy with a strategy.

He not only looked after the band's interest but he also was their defender," Vega said in a telephone interview from New York. Ramone, whose birth name is John Cummings, had been hospitalized in June. Johnny Ramone was one of the original members of the struggling Ramones, whose hit songs "I Wanna Be Sedated" and "Blitzkrieg Bop," among others, earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Johnny Ramone co-founded The Ramones in 1974 along with singer Joey Ramone, bassist Dee Dee Ramone and drummer Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band. All four band members took the name Ramone.

Dee Dee Ramone (real name: Douglas Colvin) died from a drug overdose in 2002. Clad in leather jackets and long black mops of hair, the group started out in legendary New York clubs like CBGB and Max's Kansas City. Since The Ramones' self-titled debut album in 1976, the band struggled for commercial success, but left a formidable imprint on the rock genre. Though the band never had a Top 40 song, the Ramones influenced scores of followers, including the Sex Pistols, Nirvana and Green Day.
