Our roots go far deeper than these superficial symbols however; the United States is al so the land of going to church eating family turkey at Christ mas, and the best-selling best seller here is still the Holy Bible A recent survey for the Oxforc University Press of more than 2,000 American city and smaL town families, carefully chosen to be economically and geographically representative of urban families as a whole, gives a cross- section picture of who owns and who reads the In a typical American family, the chances are 9 to 1 that there are one or more Bibles.

If among the nine, statistics say that it owns not one or two but three. Unless the Bible was handed down, the odds are 1 in 4 that it was received as a Christmas gift (most gift Bibles are presented at that time), 1 in 5 that it came Erom a church or minister, and about 1 in 6 that it was received on the birthday of the owner. Among those who own Bibles (88.8 per cent of the families polled), Southerners own more Bibles family (3 to 3,1) than people of any other section. The Moun- ain and west North Central States are next (2.9 and' 2.8), hile New England shows the same average as all regions com- dned (2.6). More than half of the families ivhich own Bibles read them daily ir several times a week.

Baptists ead their Bibles more often than ny other denomination: 80.9 per ent of the Baptists polled read daily or almost daily. Fifty er cent of the Episcopalians do kewise. Methodists lead the ist in owning Bibles, however, comprising 23.4 per cent of the owners polled; over 15 per cent were Presbyterian, 11 per cent Baptist, 7 per cent Catholic, 1.9 per cent Hebrew and 5 per cent of "no religion." A greater number of smaL town inhabitants own Bibles than do their metropolitan cousins. those families living in towns less than 5,000, almost 94 out 100 own Bibles. Of those in citia.

of over half a million, the figun drops to 73.5 per cent. There are a number of versions and editions of the Bible. (Th Bible even has its own specia type faces, usually named afte: precious and semi-precious stones). The King James ver sion, owned by more than half of those who were polled, was trans lated from the Hebrew and Greek in 1611 by a group of English scholars who, fortunately for the ears and tongues of Christian fol lowers, were also poets. The Douay Bible, the Catholic ver sion, antedates the King James by one year.

Bibles sell for varied prices Some stores have offered the testaments in a 25-cent edition. For gifts; the most frequently, paid price as revealed in the survey is $5 to 57. Among the higher priced Bibles ever produced is the Bruce Rogers Bible, brought out in 1935 by Oxford University Press. Each page of the Rogers Bible was. individually designed, a job that took designer Rogers, an American, six years.
