Hoyt Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery. Dr. Chambers, a retired optometrist, died Wednesday at his home of heart failure. He was bom April 18, 1921, in Emanuel, KY.

His parents were Jewell Cooper Chambers of Mountain Creek, Ala. and William Earl Chambers, a steam shovel operator of Carrollton, Ga. They are deceased, as are his brother, William Earl Chambers, Jr. and his sister, Lucille Chambers Guinn, most recently of Lexington. Dr.

Chambers graduated from high school in isonville (KY) High School in 1938. Following two years of pre-med at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, he pursued studies at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, and received his degree in April 1942, completing a three-year program in eighteen months. few months earlier, on November 8, 1941, he had married Eva Kathrine Clark, the love of his life and partner for fifty-nine years. Less than a year after his wedding. Dr.

Chambers volunteered for the Navy in October 1942 and served in the South Pacific as a Pharmacist Mate in the 1st Navy Mobile Optical Unit. He received his commission as Ensign in 1944 and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade before being honorably discharged in November 1945 with a battle star for service at Okinawa. After the war, Dr. Chambers and his wife made their home in Lexington and opened a successful opto-metric practice. A devoted professional who drew patients from the town and surrounding counties, he was known for his twinkling smile and jovial nature.

When he closed his office doors in 1980, he had practiced optometry for thirty years. Dr. Chambers was a member of the Rotary Club, of which he was president in 1969. He was manager of the Rotary Little League Team several years and worked with the American Red Cross. An avid sports fan, he attended an untold number of football and basketball games at Lexington High School.

In addition, he loved fishing and playing golf, both of which he did as often as possible, usually with a coterie of jocular friends. In August 2000, the board of directors of the Pine Tree Golf and Country Club voted him a lifetime member. Dr. Chambers was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he attended regularly the Jack Hay Sunday School class. Dr.

Chambers leaves two children his son, Ray Cole Chambers, Jr. of Lexington and his daughter, Karen Clark Chambers Dalton of Boston and two grandchildren, Heather Diane Chambers Green-way of Luray and Coureton Chambers Dalton of Boston and Houston. Several years ago when asked to reflect on what life meant to him, Dr. Chambers replied in a published article: "It surely is unusual how life turns out, I had many desires to be a baseball player but had no talent; then I wanted to be a medical doctor but eventually became an optometrist and enjoyed every minute of it. Makes no difference what you are as long as you enjoy it.

Living has been fun. I'd like to live forever." Pafford Funeral Home 901-968-2544 Death Notice Policy: The Jackson Sun provides free death notices for families in our area.
