Mauldin demanded participation and always emphasized the truth, McClain said. "I decided to start reading the Constitution," he said. Steve Maroney, Madison County Republican Party chairman, said it was important for McClain to stand up for conservative ideals even though his chances of unseating Tanner on Nov.

Beach, already had two children of their own before they decided to adopt their daughter Tenley. A short while later the couple adopted their son, Granite, 4, who is black.

"In our house we celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa and Chinese New Year," Hank said. "People look at our family and they ask us, 'How did this "Stacie said. The couple said they are raising their children to be proud of their cultures and open to others. Stacie enlists the help of Chinese and black adults with issues the children will face as they grow up. "People have asked me, "How are you going to tell him about being black when you're Then I turn around and tell them, "But you are, so you tell me how to do Stacie said.

The Porcners say their biological children, Thrasher, 12, and Callahan, 10, are better off having a multicultural family. "I wasn't raised that way, but I hope they'll be better equipped in firm proposal by any means." School board chairman Henry Lewis criticized the city at the Oct. 17 board meeting for asking the school to give teachers bonuses out of their smaller reserve of more than $900,000 when the city has $4 million in reserves. Barker said that's not true. The actual figure is about $1.5 million that the city has in reserve.

The city uses the money as operating funds in case tax collections are slow or don't come in at all, Barker said. Jackson Sun, Inc. 245 W. Lafayette Street, Jackson, TN 38301. Periodical postage paid at Jackson, TN 38301-9998 and additional points of entry.

For the adoption, the families had to fly to Hong Kong, where they waited two weeks for the adoption to be completed.

The group's translator, Colin Xie of Los Angeles, journeyed with the families and participated in their weekend reunion. "I think this is excellent for the kids," said Xie, who is a social worker. "When I was with the families, I was there for emotional and practical support." There is a growing need for families to adopt Chinese girls, Xie said. Some Chinese baby girls are abandoned because of the one-child law enacted in the country. "Boys are valued more," Xie said.

"They carry on the family name. I've only dealt with 10 or 15 Chinese boy adoptions in my time." A majority of Chinese girls are being adopted by American families, about 80 percent, Xie said. "The other 20 percent are going to European families." The cultural difference has not been an issue thus far for the adoptive families, who are white. "It's not any different. It's as different as you make it," said Hilda Knepp of Cincinnati.

She and her husband, Gary Knepp, were unable to have a child of their own and decided on adoption. "Once I got my daughter (Mari-ah), I felt so happy and I no longer had a sense of longing (for a child)," said Knepp, who makes sure Chinese culture is a part of her daughter's life. "I don't ever want her to feel alone," Knepp said. "It matters to me that she's in a diverse atmosphere and that she's comfortable with who she is." Being comfortable is an issue the Porcner family advocates in their Florida home. Stacie and Hank, of West Palm Schools Continued from cover Barker said Twyman must have misunderstood him and that there's never been any talk about cutting what the city gives the school system.

He also said the $250,000 was just a figure for discussion. It could just as well have been $100,000, Barker said. "It was strictly used as an example," Barker added. Michael and Pam Gardner of Kansas City, loved the experience of traveling to China so much the couple went three times and are the only family with three daughters from China.

"I think it's a little easier for our girls because they have each other," Pam said. Michael traveled with the group alone to adopt the couple's first daughter, Melissa. "Being a man by myself, I was a little bit apprehensive, but everyone was really supportive," said Michael, who is teased about not having other men in his household. "Michelle loves to play chess with me, Melissa likes to play catch and Malia just likes to hang out with me," Michael said. "Between the three of them, I've got it all." The families plan to host each other in their home cities each year to remain connected.

"We're a family," Hal said, choking back tears. 'They are all such beautiful girls, and I feel strongly about people needing to adopt these children. In doing this good thing, maybe God will look upon me kindly." Tajuana Cheshier, 425-9758 And if the city gets a $200,000 grant, for instance, it has to take the money out of reserve to pay for it and then be reimbursed later, Barker said. He said he believes the board is still receptive to giving the school system the $2 million. "I'd like to see us move forward with some type of building program," Barker said.

"We (Barker and Twyman) will have some more meetings and make sure we both understand each other's proposals before we present them publicly."
