The land will be sold to Santa Fe Plastics. their growing medium goes into the electric worm extractor Pe-vahouse's husband designed for her. It sorts worms by size; shipping-size specimens slide out one end into a wheelbarrow while babies go back to the worm beds to grow some more. Pevahouse is about wormed out for the season. She's writing letters now to her regular customers, telling them she won't be shipping again till next February.

Meanwhile, she's preparing the 30, 3-by-40-foot worm beds for the thousands of wiggling babies to winter over. They'll be insulated underneath with a bed of hay, and on top under a blanket of cotton hulls and scraps. Her farm and Hunt's radio station, which he bought in 1984, are about the last visible vestiges of the worm's heyday in Savannah. But Hunt has no intention of changing the call letters. Radio stations compete fiercely for audiences, and call letters with a hook are considered a treasure.

From 1 spent her life in garment factories and wanted to get out from behind the sewing machine. "My husband had done some worm farming about 16 years ago and he really liked it," she said. "So he got me started, and now I do all the work." Her husband, W.C. Pevahouse, works for the Hardin County Highway Department.

They started with a bed of worms they bought for $300. That was three years ago. Last year, Pevahouse harvested and shipped nearly three million worms for an annual gross of $27,000. It's hard, dirty, demanding work. Worms are raised and fed in moss-filled beds, harvested from February to August, packed in bait boxes, stacked in shipping cartons and sent off to customers.

"Anybody who wants worms, I'll sell them worms," Pevahouse said. They're not a fussy crop. They eat poultry meal and crawl around until they're big enough to bait a hook.
