By Dan Evans Sun sports reporter NASHVILLE Vanderbilt and Mem-phis State both turned over new leaves here Saturday night. The Commodores changed for the better, while the Tigers were left hanging in a 27-17 Vandy victory. Vanderbilt spotted Memphis State 17 first-half points. Then the Commodores scored all of their 27 in the second half at Vandy's Dudley Field. The game was played in front of a near-capacity crowd of 40,694.

"To come back like that and keep their poise, I'm just as proud as I can be," Vandy Coach Watson Brown said. Like his counterpart, Charlie Bailey at Memphis State, Brown won the first game of his second season at Vandyafter a MO season a year ago. Whereas the Tigers, 1-1, showed poise in their opening win last week against Ole Miss, they unraveled in Nashville. Five second-half turnovers did in Memphis State. "You can't win football games when you turn the football over," a terse Bailey said.

For Vanderbilt, Brown said he hoped the win quieted some of his team's critics. "There is only one way to get over it (the hump)," Brown said. "Win a few games." The Commodores scored twice in a span of one minute, 40 seconds in the fourth quarter on touchdowns by Eric Jones and Please see VANDY, next page. This one came largely through the efforts of Cobb and a Vol defense that held on until the offense started clicking after intermission in a game that was telecast nationally via cable station WTBS. "In the second half, we were fortunate that we were able to control the ball," Majors said.

"Mississippi State has a lot of talented players on offense and it was awfully important that we were able to control the ball under those circumstances." Often as not, Cobb was the man in control for the Vols. He turned a short pass pattern into a 39-y ard touchdown in the first quarter and added scoring runs of 23 and four yards in the second half when UT padded its 10-0 halftime lead.
