Friday's Late Boxes Phillies Cardinals 4 (14) Diamond Jaxx notes Hamilton sent home for tests By KARY B00HER kbooherjacksonsun.com The Diamond Jaxx will be without left fielder Jon Hamilton until Monday as Hamilton rests at home after he underwent tests on his heart. "He just had some chest pains," Jaxx trainer Joe Hawkins said.

"For precau- tionary measures, we sent him to the doctor, he ran a couple of tests and they came back inconclusive. Everything's checked out." Hawkins said Hamilton, who has missed the past three games, was cleared to play beginning Monday. Hawkins also said this was the first time Hamilton has complained of chest pains. "We've seen fatalities over the years and we're just being extra cautious," Hawkins said. Hamilton is hitting .280 with 11 doubles, three triples and four homers.

However, the Jaxx have a handful of outfielders who, along with Hamilton, were in a platoon situation. Mark Budzinski has played 81 games in center field, but he made his eighth start of the season in left field on Thursday night. The Jaxx also have Jackson Melian and Ray Sadler, who was promo-' ed from High-A Daytona on Wednesday. The field After three bunt singles led to the decisive, six-run inning Friday night, Birmingham manager Waily Backman compared the infield to that of Wrigley Field. "The grass plays just like Wrigley Field's does," said Backman, a 14-year big-lea- I guer.

"It sucks the ground- balls back. It's exactly the same." Steve Kaylor, the head 3 groundskeeper at Pringles Park, liked hearing that com- ment. "I took it as the highest compliment from an ex-major league player," Kaylor said, i Kaylor said he's not under orders to keep the infield like I-Wrigley Field, although Luby Veal, a Chicago Cubs roving I minor-league groundskeeper, was in town Friday night. "I keep it high because it keeps it greener," Kaylor said. "If you have eight straight games to play on it, the higher it is and if they 4 have an infield work, it lasts.

1 "My boss wants it green." Diaz's start Barons starter Felix Diaz went to 3-0 with a three- strikeout, five-hit effort over five innings Friday night. The Barons are 4-0 when Diaz starts. Although he gave up four runs, three earned, Diaz showed signs of locating his fastball well. He liked to run it inside on the Jaxx as he set up two-strike counts. Diaz was traded with Ryan Meaux on July 28 when the San Francisco Giants traded for Chicago White Sox out- fielder Kenny Lofton.

Diaz was the the fifth-rated prospect in the Giants organi- zation this season. "He's got pretty good com- mand of his stuff," Backman said. "He's got three good pitchers (fastball, change-up, curve) he can throw for strikes. He can locate. He can pitch to a game plan.

That's why he's going to be as good 1 as he's going to be," KarpBooher, 425-9637 Southern League standings Eastern Division I Pet OB Jacksonville (Dodgers) 35 25 .583 Greenville (Braves) 35 27 .565 "1 Tennessee (Blue Jays) 30 32 .484 6 Orlando (Devil Rays) 25 35 .417 10 x-Carolina (Rockies) 24 37 .393 11.5 Western Division x-Blrmingham (White Sox) 35 25 .583 xCubs 34 26 .567 1 Mobile (Padres) 33 28.541 2.5 Huntsvllle (Brewers) 32 29 ,525 3.5 Chattanooga (Reds) 21 40. 344 14.5 K-won first half Saturday1! The Braves led 3-2 when Izturis led off with his fly. Sheffield, serenaded with boos by the sellout crowd of 54.212 in his second game at Dodger Stadium since being traded to Atlanta in the offseason, couldnt locate the ball in the cloudless sky until it fell 10 feet from him. Jolbert Cabrera, called up before the game from Triple-A Las Vegas after Brian Jordan was placed on the disabled list with a bad back, bunted Izturis to third.
