The production and price problems came about in the early 1970s, when the federal government urged farmers to produce as much as possible to feed the world, Willis said. But production controls won't allow the American farmers to compete with those in other countries, said Bill Williams, a Crockett County farmer. "We can't compete with the peasants in Brazil unless we want to be peasants ourselves," he said.

"Their crops are always going to be cheaper than ours." The United States helped create that problem by teaching farming in Brazil and other countries, Jones said. Rising interest rates also have contributed to the problem, said Bob Pascall, a Henry County farmer. Without lower interest rates, many farmers will be living on welfare, he said. Some Haywood County farmers also told Jones that they have been hurt by a farm bill provision limiting or stopping production on erodable land. In some cases, they said, farmers are not able to grow crops on a large percentage of their land because of that.

Jones promised to hold-a public hearing to determine whether the law needs to be changed. 24 15 12 1819 112'A 12 358 32' 13 194 45 'A 22 642 110 1 31 128 27' 170 125 For Allen Peddy, a Chester County farmer, the meeting Monday night on how to save the family farm was too late. He told other farmers at the meeting in West Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station he faces foreclosure and is looking for a new job. About 40 other Chester County farmers face the same problem, he said. A combination of factors including drought, low prices and illness among his dairy cattle led to the foreclosure, he said.

Peddy said he will miss farming. "It's a way of life." Members of Save Our Family Farms are hopeful they can prevent that from happening to other farmers. Some farmers expressed support for a bill expected to be considered by Congress next year that would enact mandatory production controls for domestic sales. The American Agricultural Association generally supports that idea, said former President Tommy Willis, a Haywood County farmer. But opposition could come from members of Congress who represent urban areas, U.S.

Rep. Ed Jones, D-Yorkville, said. Production controls could mean higher prices for city residents, he said. His resignation will give President Reagan the rare opportunity to name six of the seven members of the Federal Reserve Board. Volcker will be the only member of the central bank who was not originally a Reagan appointee.

But some economists speculated that the departure of so many long-time members of the board in the past year may force the administration to re-appoint Volcker as chairman next August when his term expires. That possibility had been considered a long shot until recently, given the administration's push to appoint economists with pro-growth views at odds with Volcker's more mainstream concerns about inflation. Wallich's resignation follows the October announcement by Emmett J. Rice that he was leaving the board at the end of this year. The Treasury Department sold $7.81 billion in three-month bills at an average discount rate of 5.55 percent, up from 5.51 percent last week. Another $7.82 billion was sold in six-month bills at an average discount rate of 5.58 percent, up from 5.50 percent last week. The rates were the highest since Aug. 18 when three-month bills sold for 5.64 percent and six-month bills averaged 5.65 percent.

A newly formed broadcasting company that has purchased WDXI and WRJX radio stations is considering Jackson for the site of its corporate headquarters. "We haven't really settled on a home office, yet, but we'll be in Jackson sometime after the first of the year to give it a serious look," said John Columbus, one of two owners of CR Broadcasting Inc. A University of Tennessee at Knoxville graduate, Columbus said his return to Tennessee with the purchase of the two stations here "is really Homecoming '87." The transfer of ownership will be effective after Feb. 1, 1987, pending Federal Communications Commission approval, said Bill Glassman, president of Community Service Broadcasting, the stations' current owner. WDXI is an AM station with a country music format, while WRJX is a contemporary FM station; they broadcast from separate studios in the same building in Radio Park in north Jackson.

Formerly the flagship station of Dixie Broadcasting, WDXI was purchased by Community Service in 1974; WRJX received new call letters about a year ago. The sale of the two local stations by Community Service, a Mount Vernon, media business, also includes WTAO-U and WMCL-AM in southern Illinois and WKWK-AM and WKWK-FM in Wheeling, W.Va. The six were bought by Dennis Rooker, a Charlottesville, attorney, and Columbus, a radio executive in Baltimore, Md. The owners of CR Broadcasting are both 36 years old and grew up together in Pulaski, Va. Rooker was senior vice president and general counsel of Worrell Newspapers and recently acquired a newspaper in Evergreen and Conifer, Colo.

Columbus is vice president of sales and a director of United Broadcasting, which has radio stations in New York, Baltimore, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., as well as cable television holdings. 130V4 15 160 55'- 20 'A 78 14vj 'A 458 1038 201 19 673 13 63 1831 13 229 108 383 614 1 W-W 17 6 20 33 906 46' 10 268 48 14 1442 23' 1740 57 11 139 25 11 236 105'A Vi 26 221 12 848 4 Vk 14 1794 60 24 1138 39 Vi 12 222 69'- 147 30'A 170 24 Vk 17 67 46' Vi 15 78 11' 131168 39' Vi 114 22 13 2737 60 X26 49 Vk 101 20- varian.26 Varity Wackht.60 WalMrt.17 Walt sl 40 WrnC S.30 WarnrL 1.68 WshWt2.48 WellsF3.12 WnAirL WUnion WstgEI.40 Weyerhl.30 Whirlpl2.20 Whittak.60 William 1.40 WinDixl.80 Winnbg.20 Wlwth sl .12 Wvnns.60 Xerox3 ZaleCpl.40 ZenithE 17 148 29 181 12 10 508 31 751 14 207 13 2427 14 124 23Vk Vk 42'A 2'A 60 Vi 46 29 Vk 39 Vk 27' A 8Vk 37 11 45 17 7B3 1 2392 14 78 7 32 22 793 11 3492 19 987 36 15 1944 29 19 Vk 19 Vk 59Vj 1 269 Vk 9'A 40' 'A 48 18 Vk 39 239 Vi 23 34 27 Vk 4 30' 31 Vk 10 3 38'A 71 47'A 20 39 16' 'A 30 55'A Vi 20 51 Vk 33 LEXINGTON -Cattle and calves: 514. P.O. ten 1200 968-4300 Lexington, TN. 38351 "Swire Our Policy" 278 NEW YORK (AP) The stock market edged lower today. At 11 a.m. CST, the Dow Jones average of 30 industrials stood at 1,921.54, down 1.27.

Volume on the Big Board came to 69.62 million shares, compared with 64.05 million shares at 11 a.m. CST Monday. Decliners outpaced gainers by nearly 5-to-4, with 779 issues down, 625 up and 484 unchanged. Analysts said traders were nervously awaiting Friday's quarterly "triple witching hour," as well as developments in the meeting of oil ministers of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The "triple witching hour" occurs when the last trading takes place in a set of expiring stock-index futures, stock-index options and options on individual stocks.
