sports The Jackson Sun, Jackson, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 1983 5fe Vandy frontcourt is untried Basketball Rebels look to freshmen for help and 2.9, can provide inside help. "Turner is really close to being a complete player, but we lost our defensive stoppers in Williams and Young," said Newton. "I also am concerned about our rebounding. We must improve "Our guards complement each other so well, and they continue to improve," said Newton.

"I'm always surprised when Phil misses any shot, and McKinney puts team above self and is one of the most underrated players in the conference." The Commodores hope to toughen themselves for SEC play with a December schedule that includes road games against Duke and Iowa State and home encounters with Illinois and Clemson. Within the conference, Newton expects another topsy-turvey season. "I expect our league to just get better and better," Newton said. "The coaching, commitment and recruiting is there. "One thing that may make the season frustrating is that we could be a better team than last year and not have as good a record.

"It all becomes relative," said Newton. "People like Florida and Auburn could make big jumps. Kentucky is picked to win NASHVILLE (AP) Vander-bilt basketball coach CM. Newton says "effort, concentration and discipline" hold the key to whether his Commodores can compete in the rugged Southeastern Conference this winter. "I'm really pleased that most of the work habits we had last year have carried over and that our veteran players have done a great job transmitting this work ethic to our new players," said Newton, who guided the Commodores to a 19-14 record and a National Invitation Tournament berth last season.

"I have always felt that if you get them to play together and they have a mutual respect on and off the court, that's half the battle," said Newton. While the Commodores may be winning the mental battle, Newton is looking for physical support underneath after the departure of strongman center Ted Young and forward James Williams. Vanderbilt does return 6-foot-9 senior forward Jeff Turner, who averaged 13.2 points and 5.5 rebounds an outing last season, but Newton will have to hope that 6-5 sophomore forward Bobby West-brooks, 3.3 and 2.6, and 6-10 sophomore center Brett Burrow, 4.9 Newcomers expected to see action include highly touted Sylvester Kincheon, a 6-11, 230-pound center from Austin, Texas; Joe Ayers, a 6-5 swingman from Birmingham, and Don Royster, a 6-7, 215-pound forward-center. "When we signed Kincheon, a lot of our people were excited and I was excited. I still am," Hunt said.

"But he's not Ralph Sampson yet. He's not the kind of player who comes in and turns the program immediately." Hunt said another newcomer showing promise was Bruce Tranbarger of Kingsport, "a forward who is a good scorer and has promise as a fine offensive player." Another promising freshman is Andre Laird, younger brother of Eric Laird. Andre is a 6-2 point guard "with excellent quickness who will probably get in some playing time this year," Hunt said. Hunt, who watched his team destroy the University of Windsor 108-55 last Sunday, said his main objectives going into the season are to fill the vacancy at center and to achieve a more balanced scoring attack. "Ole Miss traditionally has had one man they have gone to in scoring points, and last year it was Clark," he said.

"We are trying to have a more balanced scoring attack and we think we are going to do that." Hunt said he could not take issue with preseason polls that picked the Rebels to finish in the SEC's second division, but "we could surprise some people with our team quickness." "We are going to have to rely again on our good team defense, and we will have to try to control the tempo on offense," he said. "We certainly have the good foundation for our basketball program." One of a series OXFORD, Miss. AP Coach Lee Hunt is counting on enthusiasm and hard play to help offset an inexperienced University of Mississippi basketball team top heavy with freshmen. "We do have a very young team seven freshmen but I feel we will play hard and hopefully something good will happen," said Hunt, whose Rebels went 19-12 in a 1982-83 season that ended in the third round of the National Invitation Tournament. Ole Miss tied with Louisiana State for the No.

2 spot in the Southeastern Conference. Gone from this year's squad are offensive and defensive standouts Carlos Clark and Roger Stieg, who combined for 980 points and 328 rebounds their senior season. "We've been hard at work trying to find replacements for these two starters, and we're hopeful some of our freshmen will come through," Hunt said. "We have made some progress trying to teach the freshmen our offense, but the biggest battle is teaching them major college man-to-man defense when they have played zone from the seventh grade on." Hunt is working to build a new team around three starters from last season, headed by junior guard Eric Laird. The other returning starters are 6-foot-5 Chico Partridge, a junior forward, and 6-foot Cecil Dow, a senior who played at point guard.

Also back from last season are 6-7 George Buckner at forward-center, 6-7 Derek Home at forward and Brad Pierce, who saw action at point guard last year. "We hope to use Home some at center, and Pierce has experience in the Southeastern Conference," Hunt said. there." Newton said he may find help for his front line from freshmen Steve Reece, a 6-9 forward who was an honorable mention prep All-America at Lawrenceville, Ga. 6-6 forward Glen Clem of Jasper, Ala. and 6-11 center Will Perdue, another honorable mention high school All-America, from Merritt Island, Fla.

While Newton may have headaches under the basket, he has no such worries in the backcourt, where starting guards Phil Cox, a 5-11 junior, and Al McKinney, a 6-2 senior, return along with backups Darrell Dulaney and Jimmy Lenz. Cox set an SEC record for consecutive free throws (47) while averaging 14.5 points a game. He personally did in rival Tennessee twice last season with last-second free throws. McKinney led the Commodores in both assists and steals for the second straight season. the world championship, ana LSU, Alabama and Tennessee are always tough.
