THE DAILY TIMES 3 Saturday, May 4, 2002 REGION Is southern Md. a tornado alley? Hopefully, after the last six months or so, I won't hear anybody say that anymore," Travers said. A 68-year-old Prince Frederick man died Friday from injuries he suffered in Sunday's tornado, the fifth death attributed to the violent storm. George Alvey died at the Greater Washington Hospital Center from injuries he sustained when his home was destroyed by the tornado, a hospital spokeswoman said. Alvey's wife, 74-year-old Margaret, was dead when rescuers found her and her husband Sunday huddled underneath a couch in a field of debris near the remains of their home.

About eight to 12 occur each year in the state, although most never reach the magnitude of the one that struck La Plata, Travers said. Another tornado, in fact, hit Cecil County Thursday night, damaging several homes, but not causing any injuries. While tornado threats to the region pale in comparison to the massive twisters that rumble each year through Tornado Alley in the Great Plains states, conditions in the Washington area and southern Maryland offer the right ingredients that allow a bad storm to give birth to funnel clouds. Many residents of La Plata said the same thing as they tried to salvage what they could from splintered homes and rubble heaps that were once stores and businesses. Doug Patac didn't think much of the tornado warning that came across his car radio as he sat at a traffic light in downtown La Plata on Sunday night.

After all, this is Maryland, he thought, not the Midwest where dodging tornadoes is a way of life. Minutes later a funnel cloud choked with shingles, metal, branches and other airborne missiles chased him up the street as he fled for his house. Patac, 34, made it home safely, but the powerful tornado flattened much of the small town in southern Maryland. Six people were rescued from a school bus in the county Thursday night and two were plucked from a rooftop, according to Warner's office. A nursing home was also evacuated because of rising flood waters. Brenda Blankenship, postmaster of the Post Office in Hurley, said the Knox Creek started spilling into town about 4:30 p.m.

"It was like the mountain just opened up and water started to come out," said Blankenship, who evacuated to Grundy Thursday night. "It's the worst I've ever seen. Everything is demolished. All the businesses in Hurley are gone, houses are gone. They're just gutted." The last time Blankenship saw the post office, it was submerged in 8 feet of water.

The Grundy Post Office has since taken over mail services for both Hurley and Wolford. Warner extended a state of emergency already in effect due to tornado damage elsewhere in the state and sent the National Guard into Buchanan and' Tazewell counties. More than 100,000 homes and businesses around the state lost power because of the Thursday storms, which dumped several inches of hail in some areas. One man died and five people were missing in southwest Virginia Friday after fast-moving thunderstorms swept through the state.

Rescue crews were searching along Knox Creek in Buchanan County for people who were swept away in severe floods that followed the storm Thursday. One local resident drowned in the creek, said Vicky Jones, a dispatcher with the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office. His identity was being withheld. Five others remained unaccounted for, but officials were hopeful that at least four of them were with friends or relatives and unable to call. "People were tying themselves to trees, they couldn't get helicopter assistance in, it was awful," Jones said.

Gov. Mark R. Warner requested federal disaster aid for 10 Virginia localities hardest hit by the floods, tornadoes and extreme winds this week. Disaster aid is being sought for the counties of Bedford, Buchanan, Campbell, Cumberland, Greensville, Prince Edward, Shenandoah and Tazewell and the cities of Colonial Heights and Bedford. New Jersey fishing regulators have called for a six-week ban on the harvesting of female horseshoe crabs from the Delaware Bay, a move they hope will save the shorebird that feasts on the crabs' eggs. The New Jersey Marines Fisheries Council voted 7-3 Thursday to support the proposal.

About 261.000 crabs were harvested in New Jersey last year, while Delaware fishermen took about 243,000 crabs. The state Department of Environmental Protection will likely consider the request, but it was not known when that would happen. The council also will ask Delaware regulators to impose a similar ban. STUDENT HELD AFTER ALLEGEDLY BRINGING GUN TO SCHOOL A 15-year-old St Michaels High School student was ordered held at the Carter Youth Center after he allegedly brought a BB gun to school.

St Michaels police said they received a call Tuesday morning that a student showed off the gun on a school bus and then gave it to a 14-year-old boy to hide. Police confiscated the BB gun, which looked exactly like a 9 mm chrome handgun, as well as an empty BB ammunition clip and a ski mask although they found no ammunition. St Michaels Police Chief Edward Henry said witnesses told police the teen brought the gun to school as a "scare tactic" "I understand that he was gonna put the ski mask on so that whoever he was mad at wouldn't recognize him," Henry said. "He has a specific gentleman that he was mad at" Dr. J.
