In Walker's defense, however, it should also be said he has a habit of later walking over to the same fellow he bawled out, patting him on the back and quietly telling him: "I'm just trying to make you a better ball player." There is no real malice in good.

Take this incident which occurred in Chicago last year, for example: He told Bob Bailey to go to right field with a runner on first base, but Bailey, who prefers to get up there and swing away, succeeded only in tapping a meek dribbler down the first base line which forced the runner at second. Juan Marichal (16-4) slammed his finger in a car door accident and may not be able to start tonight.

Ron Herbel (4-3) will go if Marichal can't make it while Atlanta has hard-throwing Tony Cloninger (9-7) ready for duty. The two teams play a twin bill Saturday with Gaylord Per ry (15-2) ready to go in one game. If Marichal can't make it by then, the Giant pitching staff will be in trouble. Then the South went ahead temporarily when Ron Fuiika wa of Long Beach tossed an eight-yard pass to Pat Skarble of Bakersfield. Aldridge kicked the point after touchdown.

The North scored one more TD, but then the South tallied two more six-pointers to put the game on ice. (UPI) A huge throng of mourners- many ofvthem openly weeping- paid final respects to golfer Tony Lema and his beautiful wife Thursday. More than 1,000 persons overflowed St. Elizabeth's Cath olic Church in nearby Oakland where a Requiem High Mass was sung. Hundreds of others stood outside, but were quiet and orderly. The internationally famed golf star, 32, and his wife, 30, were killed last Sunday when a chartered plane carrying them to a one-day tournament crashed on a golf course in Munster, Ind.

Eight priests all men who knew Lema shared in offering the mass of concelebration. Golf greats Ken Venturi and Tommy Jacobs and PGA Tourney Chairman Fred Corcor an were among the friends who served as pallbearers, priest said. Manager Alf Ramsey must decide whether to play Jimmy Greaves.

If his answer is "yes" he'll be hung in effigy bv thousands of Brisih fans. If his answer is "no," he may be only drawn and quartered in effigy. British soccer experts regard Greaves as the No. 1 clutch player in England perhaps in the world. Unorthodox and inconsistent, Greaves neverthe less has come through under pressure so often that he has almost as many fans in Merrie Olde England as do the Beatles.

Until seven maybe eight years ago, all a person had to do wasput in a claim for the win, place, or show money and it would be honored, whether or not the person had a ticket to back up the "claim." The state stopped that practice, however, when a fraud case broke at Golden Gate Field. WHAT HAPPENED was one of the gals in the office at the track looked into the records to see which race had left over, or unclaimed, payoffs. Then she phoned friends and had them come in and claim the payoff.

Naturally, she got a piece of the action. In those days, their "claim" was honored. Now you have to have the original ticket, or enough of it to be identifiable, to make the claim.
