Parry Boaf Shippers Plan Salmon Trips The wild winds of winter are still sweeping in from the Pacific bringing cascading rain upon the Empire, but, before you know it, the party boats again will be heading out of the Golden Gate in search of salmon. It's later than you think.

In fact some of the skippers at Sausalito already have full reservations for the opening day of the season on Feb. 12. So far very little has been written about the water being just right or that salmon were seen jumping off the Gate but if everything goes according to the rules it could happen any day. The strange part of it is things may turn out to be made to order for the anglers. Last year the season got off to a good start when a good many limits were taken during the first six weeks.

Whether it will be the same this year remains to be seen. As is always the case with ocean trolling, everything depends upon the weather. Usually there are some fair sized schools of kings off the Gate at this time of the year and with calm seas the skippers locate them in a hurry. When it's rough they are hard to find. IT'S ALMOST A CINCH also that most of the kings will be small for the next month or so.

The tackle busters are few and far between during the late winter and spring months. Where they hang out at this time of the year is anybody's guess. Maybe it will be different when the anchovie draggers get going in a couple of weeks but we doubt it. Incidentally, mentioning anchovies in this neck of the woods doesn't affect anglers to any degree but in southern California it raises the hackles on the necks of most fishermen. From what we have heard and read they are still very unhappy over the decision of the California Fish and Game Commission which allows these bait and forage fish to be turned into fertilizer.

At last report all of the sportsmen's clubs and anglers had banded together in a drive to put an initiate measure on the ballot to stop the reduction of anchovies for at least five years. This would allow time for a more thorough study of the resource. Sounds reasonable to us. UNFORTUNATELY, that isn't the only problem there is down that way. From what we have read recently the Russian and Japanese fishing fleets are giving the schools of fish in the Gulf of California a real working over and it is feared it will be only a matter of time until they are cleaned out unless there is action by the U.S.

and Mexico to stop them. So far the Soviet fleet has not taken as many tons of fish as the Japanese but it is expected to step up it's operation soon. In the period between 1956 and 1963 the Japanese fleet has increased its catch of striped marlin from 100 to 126,700. In addition thousands of tons of other species have been caught. Everything that comes aboard goes into the refrigerator.

It's not a happy thought but someday soon we may have to build a steel curtain in the ocean to protect the continent's resources. It's truly a sad state of affairs.
