Jackson, Tennessee, Friday, September 23, 1977 Alternative Programming On Public TV By MICHAEL MERCER Sun Reporter LEXINGTON Television viewers have ho reason to complain about commercials at WLJT-TV (Channel 11) here. The public TV station doesn't air any. What the station does air, however, should attract its share of the Golden Circle TV audience, spokesman said. WLJT-TV HAS been airing educational programs since 1967 when the facility was completed by the state Department of Education, said Dick Castle, program manager for the state's ETV operation. Castle said WLJT-TV is one of three public TV stations owned by the education department and operated by the state Board of Education.

The other stations are located in Chattanooga and Knoxville. Another station is under construction in Cookeville and should be on the air later this year, Castle added, pointing out that the education department has asked the Federal Communications Commission to allow the establishment of another station in Johnson City. "Our daytime programming is an educational endeavor," Castle said, for instructional purposes in area schools. "Our evening schedule is general programming and throughout the country, ETV has improved and increased its audience" with this programming, he added.
