TA09: ZONE 3 MORNING CALL, APRIL 13, 1989 23 Carbon road-fix formula: 29 27 (years) 248 By WALTER KRAUS Of The Morning Call At one time, the present Route 248 was a two-lane highway with snaking curves and very few areas to pass slow-moving vehicles. Whatever its drawbacks, it had one redeeming feature: "It was a good place to learn safe driving watching all those "When you got behind da tractor-trailer at Weissport, you stayed behind it until somewhere past Palmerton, and the aggravation showed in the accident rate. Maurice Hoffman owner of junkyard on Route 248 people getting killed," said Albert Hoffman. Hoffman and his brother Maurice, owner of Hoffman Brothers Auto Parts, Parryville, leaned against a wrecked vehicle in the junkyard and reminisced about Route 309 and later Route 29, as they carried traffic through Carbon County into the Lehigh Valley before and after his business was established in 1933. At one time or another, the road from Lehighton to Allentown made its way through the boroughs of Parryville and Bowmanstown.

It was relocated and renumbered to eventually become the present-day four-lane Route 248. Recalling the former Route 29 from Weissport to Bowmanstown, Maurice Hoffman recalled "a big horseshoe curve" en route to Bowmanstown. He recalled Craig's Inn, later renamed the Tatra Inn, as being located near an iron bridge carrying traffic across the Aquashicola Creek as the highway and the creek exited Palmerton. Acting on a request by Lower Towamensing Township supervisors, the Carbon County commissioners ordered the deteriorating county-owned bridge closed on Oct. 17, 1978.

In August 1985, the state Department of Transportation closed two access roads to the bridge off Route 248 because of a hazard they created by permitting wrong-way traffic movements at the intersection of Township Routes 372 and 384. Closing the access roads did not create any problems Please See 248 Page 25 00000880000001 PASSERI MARBLE Visit Our CERAMIC TILE MARBLE CERAMIC TILE STUDIO SHOWROOM Custom Marble Work Is Our Specialty! 8 214 N.
