Mabus has said that the next wave of reforms will focus on such issues as adult illiteracy, strengthened remedial education, early childhood and college-level education programs, and social problems that impede learning. The special committee, announced by Speaker Tim Ford, is expected to look into such matters as how much land is currently owned by the state, where the property is located, and purposes for which it is being used. Besides exploring ways to better utilize existing land, the committee may also study the feasibility of converting all such land under the auspices of one body. At this time, that responsibility is shared by many different state agencies.
