(AP)-The Trane Co.

of La Crosse has laid off 100 salaried employees, discontinued its truck-trailer air conditioning business and merged its consumer products division with a newly acquired subsidiary, Trane Chairman William Roth said today. Roth said the 100 layoffs were due to a sluggish econ- omy and the announced rea--lignment operations. Layoffs also were reported in Clarks-ville, and Montgomery, Ala. The changes include the tegration of the Trane Con-sumer Products Division into Trane CAC, the subsidiary formed after Trane purchased the Central Air Conditioning Division of General Electric for $135 million last month. Another move was a decision to discontinue the manufacturing and marketing of truck and trailer refrigeration products built in the Montgomery plant.

The shutdown costs involved in the truck-trailer operation and the consumer-products area resulted in a sharp decline in Trane third-quarter earnings, which were also released today. west state markets J0 24 13 133 6 BatdUMt BallyMt.M BaltGE2.M BangP.N BnkAml.52 BujtehlJ BaxtTr.46 BeatFdIJO Baker BalHow.M Bendlx3.32 BenfCrt BangtB BwtPd.M BattiStll Beverly.) Gold prices dropped more than $14 an ounce on the basis of rumors of large Soviet bullion sales.

The dollar hit 1,441 lira at mid-morning in Milan interbank trading, a jump of more than 10 lira from late Thursday's rate of 1430.20. Dealers said the U.S. currency was benefitting from higher Eurodollar interest rates and from an expectation that the U.S. money supply figures to be released later today will show a big increase. Rises in the amount of money in circulation have traditionally brought credit-tightening moves by the U.S.

Federal Reserve and higher U.S. interest rates. Such rising rates make the dollar more attractive to foreign investors. In Tokyo, where trading ends before Europe's business day begins, the dollar rose to a closing price of 268.90 yen from 265.75 yen Thursday. In Zurich, gold was quoted at $437.50 an ounce, compared with $451 an ounce at the previous close.

Silver traded in London at $9.78 an ounce, compared with $10.23 Thursday. Feliri li.
