C14 THE MORNING CALL, SUNDAY. DECEMBER 6, 1987 1 3 not unlucky for Lil Svoboda Bournissen paces bevy of unknowns in downhill race VAL D'ISERE, France (AP) Chantal Bournissen of Switzerland scored her first World Cup ski victory yesterday, taking advantage of changing weather to lead a bevy of unknowns to the high placings in the downhill race. Bournissen, a 20-year-old in just her second year on the team, was just the 36th starter but finished the race in 1 minute, 22.64 seconds, faster by a tenth of a second than second-place Marina Kiehl of West Germany. Another West German, Ulrike Stanggassinger, came in third with 1:22.94 despite starting 50th of 61 competitors. "The sun rose just as the usually less-dangerous competitors were starting." said Zoe Haas of Switzerland, who was third on Friday but only 16th on Saturday.

"It melted the snow and that made the glide faster." Bournissen, whose previous best was a 23rd in a downhill in Austria last year had trouble realizing she won. "I don't believe I did it," she said. She had been clocking some good practice times earlier in the week and finished Lil Svoboda rallied from the 13th spot in the first round of qualifying to take the 1987 edition of the Penn-Jersey Queens Tourna ment. Svoboda was seeded in the top pusuion ana needed to win just one match for the title the second time she has won this event. In the TV Jim Krupka stepladder fi- nal, Audrey Gable opened with a 212-172 victory over Terri Baldwin.

Gable's next opponent was Phyllis Bachman and the match was a tight one, with the final totals being 187-176. The possible turning point in the match came when Bachman doubled in the eighth and ninth while Gable split and failed to convert in the ninth. Sue Werkheiser, who was the first-round leader with a 796 total, defeated Bachman when she tripled in the middle of the game. Ironically, Bachman was plagued by the same factor that had aided her earlier when she split three times, setting the stage for the finals. "I feel great; it's a great tournament.

I just wish that more girls entered," commented Svoboda. After Ill ll the second round, she was in eighth but rallied. "In the last block, I just threw a little harder and rolled 814 for four games to take the top qualifying spot." The final match was tight, as Werkheiser tripled to take an early lead as Svoboda struck, spared and followed with the same. A triple in the middle of the game vaulted the would-be champion into the lead and a split in the ninth by Werkheiser sealed her fate. Svoboda remained clean for 10 frames and the numbers were 218-194.

Her last Queens' title came in 1974 and now Svoboda looks to have rebounded from an 1980 injury. "I've been lookin' for a tournament win since that last one and made it. Now, I'll have to go back next vear and defend my title," she said Laughingly. Gosnell-Mecchi 300s Ray Mecchi used the extra game in the four-game set to pop his first career perfecto at Bar-Don Lanes. His opening games were 192-239-217, before he made some slight adjustments.

"I moved back on the approach about eight inches to carry the 10 and used a little powder because the ball was hanging up on the thumb." Viola 12 strikes! A pulled shot in the fifth gave him the break he needed. "I pulled the ball but topped it and the ball straightened out and stayed in the pocket and carried. After that, each ball was flush." Mecchi carries 204-196 averages and has shot 279 on several occasions. He owns a 772 career high series. One has come to expect big scores on Friday nights at Parkway from the Vid-Tronics Classic League.

Ken Gosnell put the Rebels in the scoring race when he roped 12 strikes for a 300 game. Gosnell finished second in overall scoring with a 722. Rolling in the Boulevard Ladies Classic, Terri Jones put together a 655 set topping a 186 with games of 232-237. The Lehigh student had been very active with the Junior Bowlers Tour before making the jump into the adult loop. Bob Brader led the Italian club keglers this week when he shot a pair of big games, 246-244, for a 707 At the Bocce Club, Blair Weller hit a 298 in his 696 triple.

In the second game, he reeled off the first 11 and came up tight on the last ball leaving the 4-7. A 206 and 192 sur rounded the effort. In the Jim Hemmerly Bethlehem Masters, Mike Thear started off his competition with a 287, stumbled to a 182 and charged back in the final frames for a 266 for a 735 triplet. Bethlehem Center It has been long awaited but it looks as though Bethlehem will be getting a new, or, at least, renovated, bowling center. The old Central Bowling Academy, 21 Broad above Schaenen's Food Market, will once again be bustling with bowling activity.

Through the efforts of Fred Ayre, who designed the lanes, 12 alleys will be installed. Hogie Lumber Co. of Ohio is supplying the lumber and Bob Sharpless will assist in the installation. William Clauser, who will be leaving his long-attended post as Bethlehem Assn. secretary, will be the general manager.

The expected opening date for the center is Jan. 15, barring no snags in the construction. The new design will be featuring a new steel cribbing, pushing the old wooden method right into the gutter. Following a study by AMF, it has been determined that the Bethlehem area could support at least 80 lane beds and that figure gives them a lot of leeway. The surrounding mezzanine is already being worked on and the expected delivery of the lumber is within the next few weeks.

It looks as though Santa has given Bethlehem an early, and much needed, Christmas present 10th in the Friday downhill, despite another high starting position. Only Kiehl, Sigrid Wolf of Austria, seventh in 1:23.10, and Michela Figini of Switzerland, ninth in 1:23.27, managed to place in the top 10 while starting early, usually the most favored group. However as the winds died down, increasing visibility, and the snow became wetter and faster, those who started later had the advantage. Deborah Compagnoni of Italy, starting 46th, finished fourth with 1:22.97 and Golnur Posnikova of the Soviet Union, starting 43rd, came in sixth in 1:23.03. Canada's Kellie Casey was fifth in 1:23.01, beginning from the 23rd slot.

Favorites Maria Walliser of Switzerland, winner of Friday race, ana Laurie Graham of Canada, fastest in the training runs, finished far back. Walliser, the two-time World Cup overall champion, ended up 17th in 1:23.77. The men take over the competition today with a downhill race where Italy's Michael Mair has been having the top runs in practice. Crites joins seven other bowlers with two PBA titles this year.

No bowler in 1987 has won more than two. However, Crites does not believe he has a shot at PBA Player of the Year. "I didn't have a bowler of the year year," Crites said. Crites trailed Webb by 20 pins in the fourth frame of the semifinal. Webb rallied by rolling strikes on five of his last seven shots.

In earlier matches, Webb gained his semifinal berth by eliminating Ron Palombi Erie, 229-217. Palombi had opened the championship round by downing David Ozio, Vidor, Texas, 220-185. DETROIT (AP) Tom Crites of Tampa, Fla. overcame a rash of 10-pin leaves to win top prize in the $135,000 Professional Bowlers Association Budwesier Touring Players Championship yesterday. Crites defeated Marshall Holman, Medford, 221-205 to claim his second title of the year and a check for $23,000.
