U-T Radio Station Boosts Power For Stereo Broadcasts THE JACKSON SUN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 1968 A Warm Weather Meal Is Cool Salad KNOXVILLE WUOT, the University of Tennessee FM radio station, has converted its power from 68,000 to 100,000 watts as a first step toward beginning limited stereo broadcasting this fall, it was announced by Raymond A. Shirley, director of radio services. This increase in power to the maximum level permitted by the Federal Communications Commission makes WUOT the most powerful educational station in the entire Southeast, Shirley state. "The decision to begin stereo broadcasting was made in response to listener interest, and also as an effort to keep abreast of techical improvements in FM broadcasting," the director said. "The full effect of stereo can best be heard and appreciated through the type of music programmed by WUOT which features the full orchestra." The power increase and installation of a new 12-bay antenna on the transmitter tower on Sharp's Ridge was a preparatory step to the beginning of stereo broadcasting so that reception in distant listening areas would not be affected adversely.

Shirley said that the effective range of an FM station is usually decreased during stereo broadcasting. WUOT has a listening audience in areas as far away as Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City, Chattanooga, Huntsville, and AshevUle, N. C. Since the WUOT library has over 7,000 monaural recordings, stereo broadcasting will be confined for some time to certain segments of the total broadcast day. Eventually, however, as monaural recording wear out, they will be replaced by a complete stereo library, Shirley said.

WUOT, owned by U-T and operated by the radio services of the Division of University Extension, is programmed for the general adult population to reflect the University academic atmosphere. It features programmed drama, thought-provoking discussion, and all aspects of the performing arts which will provide cultural enrichment for the community, Shirley added. VEGETABLE MEAT POTATO SALAD 1 medium apple, unpared and diced 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 cup cooked meat, cubed (beef, steak, chicken, veal, lamb, pork) 1 cup coarsely chopped celery 1 cup cubed, cooked potatoes 1 hard cooked egg, diced Vz to 1 tablespoon chopped onion 1 cup each cooked peas and carrots Vz cup mayonnaise cup dairy sour cream IVz tablespoons prepared mustard Salt, to taste Va teaspoon pepper Western iceberg lettuce 1 tomato, cut into wedges 1 hard-cooked egg, sliced Sprinkle apple with lemon juice. Toss with cubed meat, celery, potatoes, diced egg, onion, peas and carrots. Mix mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, salt and pepper. Pour over sal ad and toss until wen coaiea. Chill.

Line large salad bowl with crisp lettuce leaves. Pile salad mixture in lightly. Gar- nsh with tomato wedges and sliced egg. Six servings.
