Are you due for ca shot in vEao mm? Page Six Hie Springville Herald November. 29, 1989' WS Cbnstmas devotional for those considered in the high- nsK categories, including all people effective vaccines or were immunized too soon before their first birthday. In recent years there have been epidemics on several college campuses. The annual First Presidency Christmas Devotional of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will be telecast live via satellite to members and their guests in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico Sunday, December 3, at 6 p.m. (MST).

Originating in the Tabernacle on Salt Lake City's historic Temple Square, the program will feature a Christmas message by President Gordon B. Hinckley, first counselor to President Ezra Taft Benson in the First Presidency. President Thomas S. Monson, second counselor, will conduct the service. The devotional will also feature Christmas music by the 325 voices of the world renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir, under the direction of Jerold Ottley, as well as audience participation in the singing of Christmas carols.

This is the seventh year the traditional devotionals will have been carried over the satellite to church buildings with satellite receiving equipment. There are some 2,500 such locations this year. The program will be rebroadcast over KBYU-TV, Channel 11, at 8 p.m. (MST). If you fall into this age group, you may want to check your childhood records and consult your doctor.

He or she may recommend that you be revaccinated because complications of measles can include bron-'chopneumonia or middle-ear infection. Onceyou've been properly immunized, you should be protected for a lifetime. I HEPATITIS The hepatitis virus can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer. The virus can be transmitted through sexual contact with a carrier or through exposure to a carrier's blood. Those people who are regularly exposed to blood, such as health care workers or those who are highly sexually When was the last time you had a tetanus shot? Have you ever had a flu shot? Did you know that adults of certain ages may need to be re-vaccinated for measles? If you're like most people, you remember getting shots probably as a child although you don't remember what you were immunized against It's important to note that vaccinations don't end with childhood.

The list of vaccinations recommended for adults includes influenza (flu), tetanus, pneumococcal pneumonia, measles, and hepatitis B. Consider these facts: An estimated half million Americans have died as a result of flu epidemics over the last 20 years. Approximately 300,000 new cases of hepatitis are reported each year. Fewer than half of Americans over 50 years of age are adequately immunized against tetanus. INFLUENZA (FLU) While the vast majority of flu sufferers recover without problems, some develop serious complications.

Americans lose over 15 million work days annually as a result of illness from flu. The recommended method for prevention is the vaccination. The flu vaccine is effective only before you catch the flu, so you'll need to plan head It is recommended 65 and over, those with chronic illnesses and those employed within the health care field. The vaccines need to be readministered every one to two years because of the changing nature of the flu virus. TETANUS Because of good vaccination programs, tetanus (or lockjaw) is rare in the United States.

However, the disease can be fatal and boosters should be administered every 10 years to keep up your resistance. According to the Centers for Disease Control, elderly, unim-munized people have only a 1 in 50 chance of surviving tetanus. PNEUMOCOCCAL PNEUMONIA The pneumococcus bacterium is the most common cause of pneumonia. The vaccine offers protection against 85 percent of these pneumonia-causing Vaccination is recommended for the following groups: adults with chronic illnesses, those aged 65 and over, who are otherwise healthy; and children aged 2 years and older with chronic illness specifically associated with increased risk for pneumonia. MEASLES There are millions of Americans between the ages of 18 and 30 who were never immunized for measles, received less active should be vaccinated.

It's important to know which vaccinations you've received and, when. Check with your doctor or I trace back through your childhood records. After all, why take a chance of contracting a preventable dis-ease? Mark Tvain November 30 marks the birthday of Mark Twain, one of America's best-loved humorists, lecturers and writers. He was born Samuel Clemens in 1835 in Florida, MO. His work as a steamboat apprentice and pilot on the Mississippi River inspired his famous pen name, Mark Twain, adopted in 1863.

"Mark Twain" was a river term for a depth of two fathoms. Twain's humorous articles and lectures brought him nationwide recognition, but it was his novels of boyhood adventure and innocence that became the toast of American fiction. Twain wrote most of his famous work after settling in Hartford, in 1870, including "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "The Prince and the Pauper." Twain is quoted as saying, "I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it." True to his prediction, he died April 21, 1910, in Redding, one day after the comet was at its closest point to the sun. Getting out of debt mi staying out! Valteh geti UVCC GVJG! High adoption, loiv abortion rates credited to LDS To many Americans, debt is a four-letter word in more ways than one. But there are ways to overcome the temptation to spout expletives when those monthly bills roll in and your outgo exceeds the income. Writer Jack Lyon lists five ways to avoid debt in the December issue of the Ensign, a monthly magazine published by the LDS Church.

The first, and cardinal rule is to "Keep from going further into debt," Lyon says. He recommends using checks only to pay bills sent through the mail and cash for all other purchases. Another way to keep from going into debt, he says, is avoid the temptation to buy the latest in technology, whether it be electronic equipment, cars or carpet. If it still works, why not keep it a little longer? "Get out of debt faster," is the second rule. This can be done by applying "new income," such as a raise in pay, to an existing debt.

When a loan is repaid, continue to those payments and added income toward retiringanotherdebt. The third principal is to "Pay extra principle on your mortgage." This is especially effective for new loans, when most of the payment goes for interest. Paying extra principal AUTO INSURANCE TOO HIGH? shortens the life of the mortgage and can add up to big savings in interest payments. "Chart your progress," Lyons says. List the names of your loans and debts and cross them off as you pay them off.

You should also write down the total amount of money you owe and subtract from it as you make a payment on any debt. Finally, "Save for the future." Lyons believes that there are ways to save, "even if you are heavily in debt." A prime way is through automatic payroll deduction savings offered by many employers, especially if the employer matches a percentage of the money you save. A three percent deduction, matched by the employer automatically gives, you a 100 percent return on your money. Public invited to Community Church BazGor The Springville Community Presbyterian Church will hold their annual Christmas Bazaar this Friday and Saturday, December 1 and 2, at the ch urch, 245 South 200 East in Springville. It was presented Friday, November 3 to Lee Christensen, Valtek vice-president of human resources. UVCC was John Thompson, employer resource specialist. Since the early 1970s, Valtek has provided temporary employment for UVCC students who are in related fields of study, such as machining and drafting. "Working with progressive companies, such as Valtek, provides our students with valuable on-the-job experience and a source of income while attending school," said Thompson. According to Christensen, Valtek has benefited by the program through reduced training costs.

"The Cooperative Education Program also provides us with a good look at Utah has the highest child adoption rate and the lowest abortion rate in the nation, according to the National Committee for Adoption, whose chief gives much, of the credit to the influence of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. William Pierce says the emphasis on traditional family values in the state-two-thirds of whose residents are Latter-day Saints-probably plays a strong role in influencing abortion and adoption decisions. "Not only do the Mormons place a strong emphasis on family values," Pierce said in a interview, "but the State of Utah has a substantial number of very good, professional social service agencies which are operated by the Church and whose services include adoptions." Referring to the Church's LDS Social Service office in the state, Pierce said "the network probably contains some of the most highly trained professional social work ers in the entire country." The adoption ratethe number of adoptions for every one thousand abortions and out-of-wedlock births-was 52 in Utah for 1986, the latest year for which comparative figures are available. "That's five times the national average," he said. The Beehive State not only leads the nation in overall adoptions, Pierce said, but its record is admirable in the area of adopting children with special needs such as physically and emotionally handicapped children, older children, sibling groups and minorities.

Meanwhile, "Utah has the lowest abortion rate of any state in the Union," Pierce said. The Utah abortion rate is 121.9 per one thousand live births, as opposed to 4229 for the nation. "In Utah, abortion is seen as an option which people ought to try to avoid if at all possible," Pierce said.
