Certain Southern contingents on the Korean front march into action -with the American and the Confederate flag side by side. However everywhere along the Atlantic seaboard, from New York to Miami, and westward into the Mississippi watershed pert little banners flap in the breeze from car aerials, souvenir stands, or in the hands of youngsters, teenagers and grown ups. Picture New York Times. symbol of a mid 19th Century "Lost the Confederate States of America, they are more confused than ever.

Why fly it now, nearly a century later? Why do cars of Northern states, which defeated the Confederacy, display it? And why is it being carried by Shrin- ers in New York jamborees, at Atlantic City bathing beauty contests, or on planes in Detroit Dixiecrats and Confederate Flag Political zeal in the South. The Dixiecrats raise the Confederate New York Times. air races? Is there some deep underlying significance, or political undertone, or sectional significance to the movement? The answer, of course, is: Certainly not. Although it may be difficult to explain to an outsider. America has a word for it: Fad.

Flying the Dixie flag is simply another of those novelties tha't somehow becomes a rage. Someone starts something, it catches on, and manufacturers and venders pick it up. Soon everyone wants to get in the act, and the boom is on. There is a feverish- rush. The Stars and Bars fad is different only in that it has attracted some strange camp followers and stirred up embers that cause grave headshaking in certain quarters and sly chuckling in others.

Diehard Federalists, for instance, see in it a dark, Dixie- crat plot to undermine the Union. Sentimental Southerners regard the whole thing as a travesty on the sacred memory of gallant members of a glorious army that fought and died for the Confederacy. "States Righters" declare it is a protest against the Deal" administration. Unreconstructed rebels smile that the banner which their ancestors could never carry beyond Gettysburg, now has infiltrated the entire North, largely in damyankee hands. In fact, no one should be unduly upset or gleeful about the situation.

The pert and sassy banner seen everywhere today is a Dixie flag, but it is not the official national emblem of the Confederacy. Neither is it the "Stars and Bars," nor the "Bonnie Blue Flag," nor the "Stainless Banner" famed in Southern song and story. The Confederacy and the Confederate army, in fact, had quite a few flags," but only three of them were officially adopted by the Confederate Congress. Strange as it may seem, this starry blue cross on an oblong blood red field, now the rage, was not one of them, although it was incorporated into the design of the last two official flags. The unofficial emblem that is now outselling every other flag but the Stars and Stripes was PARKHURST Fold-door Stock Racks and Grain Beds for all makes of trucks.

known during the Civil War as the "battle flag," or the "Beauregard flag," a. child of necessity born of the confusion of the first battle of the Civil War. The South had an official flag, the "Stars and Bars," some months before actual fighting broke out. This emblem, which had three broad horizontal red and white stripes and a circle of stars in a blue field, was hoisted over the Statehouse in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 4, 1861 the day President Lincoln was inaugurated in Washington. During the first Battle of Bull Run, disaster for the South was narrowly averted when Southern reinforcements, flying the Stars and.Bars, were mistaken for Northern troops.

The error was noted in the nick of time and the South won the battle. But the lesson was learned, and General Beauregard demanded a design that, in the heat of fighting, could not be confused with the Stars and Stripes. The Confederate Congress took no official action, but a group of Confederate military leaders did, and quickly. The pattern selected was a square flag "having a Greek Cross of blue, edged with white, with thirteen equal white five pointed stars; upon a red field," This is the flag that saw more land action than any other. How did the current fad get started? There are scores of claimants, in both the North and the South.

Southern rooters brought Dixie flags with them as a rallying symbol. As for those who have been espousing the fad as an anti- Truman symbol, the President must have taken a certain sly satisfaction in autographing a photograph recently for a lady described to him as "an unreconstructed rebel Democrat from North Carolina." The President wrote on the picture: "To Mrs. Canna S.
