a At A a. The breaszask giren was one ax aao moi recAcTcAs aflAirs of the season. An exchange says Soldltars flgnre eon spienonsly in the House of Lords and tbe knighthood of England. It is interesting to note this snocess of the pro; of destroying human life in connection with the fact that medical science has not a single representative in the House, and not a dozen baronets or knights in the three kingdoms. Shoes are still very low, with buckles or bows on the top, at least for demi toiiets.

There is a tendency to wear lower and bioader heels. Some ladies hare had the good sense to openly adopt the low, broad heel of the English twalk isg shoes, but there are many, who are silly enough to still adhere to the high Louis XV heeL whioh is ruinous to the feet, and of ten to health. The proprietors of the lxradonTlmes hare modified their scheme for a halfpenny newspaper. The new journal, to be called the Summary, will contain a summary of the news of the day, and other matter likely to prore of general interest, and be published in time to appear on breakfast table. Ia this abridgement of the great news piper leading articles will not be moladed.

An expert in commercial Talaes who lately Tlsited Saratoga lias made.erery lady, happy by estimating the cost of the dresses seen at the Grand Union. He says not a dress worn on the piazza coat over a hundred dollars, and the most expensive dress displayed at the Congress Hall hop could have been covered by three hundred dollars. Such figures are calculated to render young men hopeful and ambitions for the bonds of matri xnony. On account o( the severe illness of Mr. BertoU, ltvlnr on Frenchmen street, opposite the Washington Square, there will be no concert on baiurday evening.

Oranite) Pawenaent, HOW THE STREETS OF CHICAGO ARB BEIKQ PAVED. The system ef granite paring recently adopted by the city and now being carried out on sections of Madison. Washington, Randolph, and State streets was examined by a Tribune reporter yesterday. Two kinds of frramte are being used, one from the Wisconsin quarries and the other from the Fox Island quarries in Maine. The Fox Island granite that is being used on Randolph street is the same as tbat used in the new Board of Trade Building.

The polished pillar in front of the new County Building are also from the Fox Island Quarries. The, Fox Island granite is gray, with a pink: tint when polished, while the Wisconsin sranite i of a strong pink tint in the' rouah. granite seem to be equally: perfect. Toe Wisconsin granite is sua, to not be uniform in character, some of, it ha riBR been rejected by the Board or Pnblio Works'for being softer than tbe standard, bnt the kind that ia.now els laid down seems to be of excellent, qnahty. The system of lsying down the pavement is about as follows When the old wood pavement is taken away tne street is excavated to a depth of about sixteen inches.

A layer of broken stone seven Inches deep is first laid down. This stone come from Stony Island, where it is broken by steam crushers. On top or this there is layer of coarse gravel about two mehes deep. The whole I then rolled with a twenty ton steam roller. A layer of sand one inch deep i 1nt on next, a nan tne kiujiw wae o(j aid down edgewise, tbe averare meas nrement ol eaen niocx oeingaoout sen inches in length, four in width, and six inches in depth.

A coating; of clean, light gravel is then put on whioh fills up the interstioes. A coating of asphaltie cement comes next, and a very light laver of sand completes tbe work. Similar pavingis used in Boston, New York. Portland, Bangor, and some other Eastern cities. Tbe aspbaltie cement has not been used in otber cities, that mode of finishing having, originated with the City Engineer here.

His idea is that the pavement should be kept perfectly water tight in order to prevent any disintegration underneath. This pavement, it is said, will keep good for aboot fifty years. The sections at, present being done are: Randolph street, from Clark street to Wabash Avenue; Madison street, from State street to Wabash Avenue Washington street, from Dearborn street to Wabash Avenue; and State street. from Jackson street to the river. The plan followed is to work at only one block on each street at a time In order to inoommode the trafio aa a little as possible.

About thirty men can do one block in a weak. Chicago Tribune, Aug. 7. 7vr; The steamship Wanderer, Cap. Betd commandinar, cleared at the Castooi Honee on Finder morning for Belize, Livingston and Poerto Cortes, with an assorted carro, taking as passengers A.

The Ohio Liquor Dealers' Protective Association met in convention yesterday, assembling' at 11 o'clock, eighty delegates being present. Wd. Backus, chairman of the association, was chosen Presiden.t, and W. J. Moore, Secretary of the same, was made Secretary of the Convention.

The Chair then stated that the object of the meeting was to organize for the fall political campaign and take into consideration all other qnestions of The obnoxious laws, said, passed' by the Republican Legislature hss censed great disaffection in the Republican ranks, as shown by the last two elections. The Pond bill and Soott law had proven toe heavy for them to carry. The Scott law made to redeem a lost cause. In the spirit of the law the moat contemptible hypocrisy was shown. The speaker charged the Republican party with try lag to please the temperance people with the local option clause, and the saloon keepers by repeating a part of the Adair law; and others by regulating the matter by local ontdon.

He denounced tbe Scett law. as it increased rather than diminished the low dives." The speaker believed in making the business legitimate and in divorcing it entirely from bad associations, the result of which would be to make the business respectable. The two constitutional amendments were important and should be well considered. Either of them was dangerous to the fundamental principles of go ernmentv The speaker believed that personal liberty should be supreme. In conclusion, he thought that their hopes rested with the Democracy, and their suceees depended on tbe defeat of i the Republican psrty.

A Democratic 1 Government of Ohio in 1883 means a Democrat! Pietident in 1834, and the work for th was therefore plain. Committees en resolutions ore dentials were then appointed. An adjournment was then taken until afternoon. Oa reassembling at 2 o'clock the gentlemen appointed to select the central committee, reported as follows 1. The State Central Committee shall consist of seven members, all of these to reside in Cuyahoga county.

We appoint the following to constitute the aforesaid committee Hon. Jacob Muel ler Chum, Wm. Backus, John II. Tarley, Chas. Knercbt, Chas.
