SUNDAY CALL-CHRONICLE, Allentown, August 10, 1980 I ASX THE VET ANTIQUES By RALPH and TERRY KOVEL Antiques Authorities Add Teplitz' porcelain to update your dictionary Most of the pieces made in this area had elaborate decoration and shaping. Many Art Nouveau designs were made. Q. What is a married piece of furniture and what is a divorced piece of furniture? We heard both terms at a recent auction. A.

A "married" antique is a single piece that was made from two unrelated pieces. For example; a table and a chest of drawers may be joined together to form a tall cupboard. "Divorced" furniture is made from part of an original antique plus new or old materials. Old legs can be joined to a new top making a "divorced" table. Both types of antiques are of less value than totally original pieces.

For your copy of the Kovels' booklet, "Re-finishing and Dating Trunks," send 50 cents and a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope with your request to Ralph and Terry Kovel, in care of the Sunday Call-Chronicle. Like the CB radio enthusiast, the antique collector has a special language. It is only known to those who use it every day. It changes rapidly and dictionaries often do not list the words. Googley eyes, Carnival glass, Depression glass, Poo ware, roly-poly tin, all have a special meaning to collectors.

One type of porcelain that has gained a new name is "Teplitz." It was an art pottery made by several companies in the area of Teplitz-Turn, Bohemia (now Czechoslovakia), during the late 19th and 20th-centuries. Pieces made by the Riessner Stellmacher and Kessel firm were marked with a variety of marks, some with the word "Amphora," some with the letters "RSK," and a few with the word "Teplitz." The Alexandra Porcelain Works used a mark with the letters "EW" a crown (for the owner Ernst Wahliss) or the name Alexandra and the city name Turn. Today, all of these are called "Teplitz" porcelains. mmmmm 1111 Teplitz vase has cut-out design at top By DR. MICHACL FOX Veterinarian and Animal Psycholpgist A newcomer cat may spoil the brood Q.

We've bad two Siamese cats for more than five years. Recently a black Balboa cat joined our family. We bad all the cats "fixed," but the younger Siamese has still not accepted the new cat and still hisses and hits at her. How long will it take? This has lasted over four months. R.B.P., A.

It takes anywhere from one to two months for a new cat to settle into an established cat family and sometimes they never settle in. Often the established cat family undergoes social stress and changes in relationship with old friends, even becoming enemies. I don 't generally advise people to add more cats to an established family of two or more cats. More often than not, trouble ensues and things never settle down. Also; there is the risk of introducing disease cats are walking virus factories.

My advice is to find a good home for the newcomer as soon as you can. White I know of several large and happy cat families, your two Siamese have been together perhaps too long now for them both to accept a new cat in their midst. Q. My 3-year-old Lhaso Apso is very close to me, as I am to him. In the two times that I left him to go on vacation, he moped around at my sister's house and ate very little.

As she said, it was very evident he missed me and his home. My problem is that my whole family and I are dispersing on vacation for two weeks, and I am afraid my dog will get very sick from loneliness at my sister's again. Can a dog die from a broken heart? A.B. A. Have you thought of finding a house-sitter? A good neighbor or student could stay at your home and take care of your pooch.

He will be depressed without you, but he will have the comfort and security of familiar surroundings plus a sympathetic dog-sitter. That will help your dog weather the separation. The. chances of your dog dying of a broken heart are slim, although animals have passed away from loneliness. It is a fact that pets can become very depressed, like "homesick" children off at camp for the first time.

Trouble is, pets understand, so they can suffer more. What a responsibility, indeed, ior those of us who care. Q. This is the first time my 6-year-old Doxie has had a false pregnancy. My vet says that as long as it's not bothering her, he doesn't want to give her a hormone shot.

My question: What causes a false pregnancy? A.J.M. A. Once a dog has a false pregnancy, she's likely to have others. I do not advise hormone shots to stop the problem. The best remedy is to have your dog spayed.

This will stop all future false pregnancies and will eliminate the chances of an infected uterus or ovarian cysts. It will aslo help reduce the chances for mammary tumors. A false pregnancy is caused by hormones being produced from the corpus luteum of the ovary which persists after the dog has been in heat. These hormones make the animal react as though she's pregnant even to the point of guarding a slipper or favorite toy as though it were a puppy. Q.

I have a small box turtle about the size of a silver dollar. I put it in a terrarium with dirt and patches of grass at either end. I put fresh pieces of lettuce, apple, tomato and other fruits and vegetables in for him, but it seems like he never eats. Also, I have a hermit crab. Would it be safe to put them together? L.B.

A. Turtles don't eat very much, but some fresh earthworms and moist cat food would be a good addition. Do you have plenty of bigger and new shells for your crab? No, I wouldn't put the turtle and crab together. The trouble with keeping wild creatures such as reptiles, amphibians and crustaceans crabs and such), is that they don't always adapt well and slowly starve to death. The care of these is extremely complex.

So why don't you let them go free if you really care for them. Hermit crabs belong by the ocean rather than in someone's home. Their right to life is surely greater than our right to keep them for our own amusement. Gerbils, hamsters and other cage-adapted pets should satisfy your needs and they! aren't likely to fade away and die. Send your questions to Dr.

To spark the interest of coin collectors, a number of coins have been made in rectangular shape. Special proof set editions have been made with mintages as low as 25 sets. Long after Tonga reclaimed its 1,200 square-foot coral reef in the Pacific, the Minerva Times continued to be published (from Orange County. Calif. claiming an invasion by Tonga and threatening war.

While the Phoenix Foundation has no Minervan residents to fight on its behalf, Veramana has mounted an army of 600. But the only fight to date has been a verbal one between the French and the English as to whose responsibility it is to dislodge the Veramanans, hopefully before they issue their own money. Q. I noticed your article on Victoria's legacy and that sent me up to the attic to find my small collection of English coins. Among them are some half-pennies dated 1912, 1922 and 1932.

S.M.S., Woodbury, N.Y. A. Using Krause's Standard Catalog of Modern World Coins, your half penn ies are valued at 65 cents, 35 cents, and 15 cents respectively. The prices are for those in fine condition. Q.

I recently read your article that said a 1913 nickel is worth $300,000. 1 looked it up in a coin book and found it listed at $95,000. My husband gave me one of these coins in 1920. Please let me know why there is such a difference. Mrs.

M.T.D., Seminole, Fla. A. The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is a very rare coin indeed. The $300,000 figure is based on a recent auction sale and that is the amount that a collector paid to obtain one. The $95,000 figure was from a previous sale.

That does not mean that all 1913 nickels are that valuable. Only five are known of the Liberty Head design, but over 75 million were struck with the new Indian Head or Buffalo nickel design. Q.I have a 1922 silver dollar with the of In God We Trust spelled with a V. S.D., Nassau, the Bahamas. A.

the Republic of Minerva had issued its own coinage. With its unique claim to nationhood, came one of the most unusual coins ever developed a bimetallic, precious metal piece with a $35 face value. Not one of the proposed 30,000 citizens yet lived on Minerva (they were going to build a city on stilts), but there was money to spend. Oddly, no change had been planned for use with his high denomination piece. Struck by a private mint in California, the silver coin was struck in pure silver with a 24-karat gold overlay on the head of Minerva, whose portrait dominated the piece.

On the reverse was the "Touch of Freedom." The coins were struck on the order of the Minerva Development Bank and sold at face value to collectors answering advertisements in coin publications. No record has been released on the quantity minted; coin catalogs list them as fantasy pieces without valuation. The King of Tonga, Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, is somewhat of a numismatic maverick himself, issuing coins with tiny diamonds embedded in them to mark his fiftieth birthday; striking high denomination coins in such romance metals as palladium. seems an unlikely place to plot a South Pacific rebellion. But for the past decade, the Nevada world headquarters of the Phoenix Foundation has been the meeting place of dreamers trying to establish an independent, tax-haven nation of their own. The group tends to set its sights on small, sparsely populated islands. Their attempts wander from the Azores to the Bahamas to Micronesia, and now to the New Hebrides. On July 30.

the "condominium" of the New Hebrides, coruled by England and France since 1914. was slated for independence. A revolt on the island of Espiritu Santo caused a postponement. The islanders have declared themselves to the new nation of Veramana. Plantation workers armed with bows and arrows and uniformed with toy helmets captured the British district commissioner.

He has since been released and the rebellion has more the trappings of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera than an actual uprising. The news media has a field day. Phoenix Foundation's previous attempt to form a nation was even more comical. In 1972, they "seized" an island from the Kingdom of Tonga, one so small that if appeared only at low tide. On a tall pole, a flag of Minerva was raised.

The design and the name emanated from the Nevada-based foundation.
