The magnificent Guiding Star arrived from Cincinnati Monday night with a line load of Western produce, and will return this evening 'with a good load of sugar and molaAses. A. Scudder, which arrived yesterday from St. Louise brought down 7534 sacks of corn, 9786 sacks of oats and a lot of other Stuff. The Corona is duo from the Oaaehita to Tne Katie Kounti arrived from the Arkansas Monday night with a full load of cotton. At a point a few miles below Pino Bluff she lost eleven days by low water and the breaking of a part of her machinery.

The little steamer Fletcher arrived from Shreveport yesterday, and will be placed in dock for repairs. The 8. H. Parlsot left Baton Rouge at 5 P.M. yesterday, with 1503 bales cotton and 10,000 sacks seed.

Capt. Geo. D. Hite Is on the sick list. Capt.

C. G. Wayne, has sufficiently recovered to attend to business again. Mr. Thomas Bond Is filling the position of second clerk on the U.

Dare Sllrer's steamer Bright Light arrived at St. Louis last Friday, and will probably return this week in the Anchor Line. Mr. Nicholas A. Selling, a brother of Capt.

Jno. F. Kellrng, well known in ooal circles, died in Cincinnati last Saturday. Deceased was a native of Pittsburg and 30 years of cure. Capt.

John Howard, who was badly Injured in the elevator accident at MoKnight's carpet store in Louisville, some time ago, has sufficiently recovered as to be able to get out with the aid of crutches, and in a ehort time will be entirely well. The Howards, of Jefferson, during the year 1882 built and completed (all but the oatt thirteen steamboats and twenty two barges. Will Hays says The 8. H. Parlsot is making her mark of success in the New Orleans, Yicksburg and bends trade.

Louis and Mississippi Valley Transportation Company, departed for Cairo yesterday morning, with three barges loaded with bulk grain for European shipment via New Orleans 'and the Jetties. Cincinnati Commercial, Dec. 31 Capt. J. R.

King has put a new buoy on the sunken canal boat at Parkersburg Bridge, where the 'TnTna Graham struck. It it in the Ohio span, 100 yards from the Ohio shore and 200 yards from the railroad bridge. He says that boats had better run the jipan or they will have trouble, as there is but three feet of water on the boat. Major John D. Adams, of Little Rock, who recently built the new Kate Adams at Pitts bnrg.at a'oost of $90,000, has built over forty steamboats.

He began river life as a captain of the Little Exchange, which ran from Napoleon, the mouth of the Arkansas River, to Little Rock. The Pittsburg Dispatch says It somehow don't seem exactly the thing to speak of Will Hays going on a maiden trip, for he is no chicken and has traveled extensively, but that is the way the expression is used, 'and it must be adhered to. But the steamer Will Hays, although a winter chick Just now, promises in a few days to develop into a tour foot Shwnghai, with head and great capacity to scream and Louisville Courier Journal i Capt. Pink tailor trade, and because he had to nurse a baby, lie left the tailor, aad tool? a contract to drive two cows and calves from Oldham county to this city for 60 cents, Varble, the well known Falls Pilot" and 8teamboatman generally. Is well known in marine circles from the AUeghenies to the Gulf.

Being a suocessf ul and self made" man, vm deem it our duty as an enoour ager" to the young men of the present generation to write this sketch. It will be seen that "Pink," as he is familiarly called, hoed bis own row" and won for himself the enviable reputation whioh he so richly enjoys. Capt. Pink Varble was born in North Carolina, near Saulsberry, on the 6th day of September, 1828. His parents came to Kentucky in 1831, crossing the mountains in wagons and settling in Oldham county in in 1832.

The entire family took the small iox, and his father died with it, eaving his mother with seven boys to raise. In 1840 his mother married again, and Pink and his step father could not agree. In 1841 he went to learn the which he did, reaching here, for the first time, in 1642. He hired himself to the late Capt. John Collins to drive a wood wagon for $2 per week, whioh he did for two years.

He quit driving for Collins and went to driving a yoke of oxen, hauling lumber for the late Capt. EliVansickle forts per mouth. Vansickle liked him so well that he contracted with him to remain in his employ until he was of age, Vansickle agreeing to give him two winters' schooling. Pink stayed his time out, went to Vleksburg and opened a steamboat coal yard for Mulford, of New Orleans. On the 16th of April, 1852, be came to tis city, went to Ghent, and was married there April 28, 1852.

Came back here, took command of the little Adelaide, in the Louisville and Owensboro trade. In 1853 he paid Capt. Funk $500 to resign his position as Falls Pilot, and he was elected by the City Council to fill the position which he has honorably and successfully held up to the present day. Capt. Pink has taken more tonnage over the falls than any other three pilots that ever crossed the falls.

He has been a falls pilot for twenty nine years. He has also built, owned and been interested in thirty nine passenger and freight boats, and was the first man who ever introduced a towboat in our harbor for harbor towing purposes. He built and run the Pink Varble in '69 run her until the Confederates got her at Nashville in 1862. During the war he commanded the Diana, and also the Jacob Strader on a sanitary trip to Vicksburg. He has also piloted and commanded boats in the Henderson trade, United States.

Mail Company, and during low water seasons he has always been successful both as captain and pilot. Capt. Pink Varble is yet in the ull vigor of life and manhood. He is cool and brave as a lion, generous to a fault, and as tender hearted as a spring chicken. The falls of the Ohio without Cant.
