CLAUDE AVENUE IMPROVEMENT. Bell has submitted to streets and landings committee City Engineer report on the motion Introduced In the by Mr.

Marmouget, of the Ninth ward, relative to the Improvement dty council both roadways on St. Claude avenue, from Poland to Delery streets, guesting the city engineer to furnish plans and estimates of work. before The city preparing the plans and specificaengineer deemed It adtisable, tions, to of first submit improvements an approximate to be estimate the made, so that be the provided money to for. carry The on city the work may engineer wants to be certain that the required sum for his the office will Improvements have be assured, because to devote considerable time to the preparaof the estimates. An examination of St.

Claude avenue, from Poland to Delery streets, shows that in order to make a good street of it an expenditure of about $9250 would De necessary. estimating on a basis of AD average All of 6 inches on the roadway, and new culverts throughout the entire length of the avenue. The detalled estimate would be as follows: Four thousand cubic yards of earth at $1 per cubie yard, $4000; 175 feet of board measof lumber for culverts, at $30 per 1000, $5250, making a total of $9250. Moreover, there is such a lack of drainage facilities that the estimate would probably ran up to $10,000, by adding about $750 for drainage Improvements. Of course, the roadways could be put 1n passable condition for less money than estimated above, but the work would not be durable, and would, in the course of time, prove unsatisfactory.

The distance to be covered is 7700 lineal feet on each roadway, or a length of 400 lineal feet, Including twenty-four Intersections. THAT IMPEACHMENT. number of citizens of the Fifteenth ward have petitioned the city council not to Impeach Recorder Clement. They say, that the recorder now and al ways -has been a conscientious and impartial judge and dealt with all men alike, and there can be found no fault with him as government otticial or A8 man; that his action In discharging the two clerks and replacing them by two others, was an act in keeping with his good Judgment and common sense, and in every, way justified by the people over whose jurisdiction he presides. He is popular and is held in nigh esteem; has their full contidence and sustains a character above reproach, An evidence of which 1s the fact that he has been renominated for the position he holds by two of leading political partles now before the people in the municipal and parish election to be held.

The petition contains the names of 141 eitizens of Algiers. PROTEST AGAINST A BARROOM. Rev. J. Lambert, pastor of the church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, at Louisiana avenue and Chestnut street, has entered a protest against Weber Toerster's opening and operasing a bar200m at the corner of Toledano and Chestnut streets.

Father Lambert says that the bar200m will be within prohibited limits as the law prescribes the operating of barrooms 300 feet from churches.
