N. June 21. 1853, and -was on the frontier continuously until 1SG2, rhen Lis father, the late General James H. Carleton, led the California column against the Apaches of Arizona and the Navajoes of New Mexico. Yonnjt Carleton was then at school, receiving a classical and scientific education at Santa Clara College, California, conducted by the Jesuits, who had recently been expelled from their university at Milan, Italy.

li Carleton's father, after thirty-six years' continuous service, died at San Antonio, where he was commanding the Fourth United States Cavalry, Jan. 7, 1873. His last wish was that his eon should see at least two years' active service in the regular' army. Henry Guy wrote, accordingly, to Grant, who was then president, and was by him appointed second lieutenant of Troop 11. Eighth United States Cavalry, and ordered to Fort McKae, K.

Continuous scouting against the Apaches kept him busy till June. 1S74. when he was appointed engineer and signal officer of the battalion under the late Major William Redwood Price, Eighth Cavalry, and ordered to the Staked Plains, in General Miles' campaign against the Kiowas and Coniancb.es.

At the close that war, in 1875, Carleton's regiment was ordered to Fort Brown, where it had a few months' active work on the lower Rio Grande, ridding the border of Cortina's band of cattle thieves. At a fight with them at Las Cuevas, in November, 1875, Carleton's knowledge of telegraphy came into peculiar play. Major A. J. Alexander Lad been dispatched from Fort Brown with focr companies of the Eighth, on news being received that McNally's famous Texas Eangers had corralled Cortina's band at L.as Cuevas.

The battalion made a forced march of ninety-one miles in twenty-three hours, reached McNally just as the desperadoes were charging his lines and Lad a sharp fight. Acting under orders from Washington, Alexander then proceeded to cross the Rio Grande, under protection of a heavy fire from a battery of Catlings. McN ally's company and two troops of the Eighth cavalry er already across and ou Mexican oil, when Alexander directed Lieutenant Carleton to cut the telegraph wires, and inform the district commander that his orders were being carried out. Carleton did so, with the result that Alexander was at once ordered to cease hostilities and reorosa his forces to the American side. Grant had evidently reconsidered fiis obvious design to force Mexico into declaring war, hut the event greatly disgusted all hands in the little battalion, who thus lost a long looked-for chance for great)-distinction.

The regiment now settled down to the ways of peace, and Aug. 1 of the following year Carleton resigned and went to New Orleans, where he obtained employment on the old Times. Here his literary career began. In. 1878.

during the fearful yellow fever epidemic Carleton was the only writer spared by the disease in the editorial room, and in addition to his duties there, won distinction by his correspondence with the New York Times, his letters being widely copied on account of the scientific value which his knowledge of medicine enabled him to give them. At the close of the epidemic prize was offered to all poets from the Potomao to the gulf for a poem expressing the gratitude of the south to the north for aid tendered during the plague, and Carleton won it against 311 competitors. In 18S0 he went to Chicago, and, whiie writing special work for the Tribune and Herald, wrote "Memnou," a blank verse tragedy in five acts, which was Jiurchased by the late John McCul-ough. The tragedian' subsequent failure in Louis Wingneld's play, "The Bondman," made him chary of essaying another novelty tor awhile, so "Mem-Xton" never saw the light. In 1882 Carleton went -to New York, the home of his ancestors, and joined tne editorial staff of the Times.

In 1SS3 he took editorial charge of Life, then an infant but a few weeks old. His satires on the nouveau riche and the familiar sketches of 'The Thompson Street Poker Club" caught the public fancy at once, and the paper received an impetus which in a few months carried it to unqualified success. He was first of eastern editors to recognize the fenius of James Whitcomb Riley, and obtained as contributors the brightest wits of the country. In 1884 Carleton wrote "Victor Da-rand," which Lester Wallack promptly accepted and produced, without' the alteration of a line, Deo. IS of that Its success was unqualified, and ran over 100 nights, at Wallack's Theatre, and was revived for the supplementary season.

He then wrote 'The Lion's Mouth," under contract with the Madison Square Theatre, whose managers desired to star George Kiddle in it. The contract with Kiddle was broken, and the Mallorys wanted Carleton to alter the play for Mantel, then under their management. As the alteration involved the cutting down of a character whose strength Carleton considered vital to the play, the author refused. His faith in the work has since been justified, for Frederick Warde, the tragedian, produced it as originally written, "last March, in San Francisco, and scored such a triumph that this season he plays it almost to the entire exclusion of his repertory. Next season Warde will also produce "Memnon," hich has been idle for ten years.

Louis James will be in the cast. Feb. 17, last year, J. M. Hill brought forward Miss Cora Edsall as a successor to his former star.

Miss Mather, in a ply by Carleton called "The Pember-tons." which was written to order, with a death scene ending the play. The lives of star and play were brief, and Carleton scored his first failure. The author then wrote V-arKa Trouble" and 'The Princess of Erie." In appearance, Henry Guy Carleton seems more the athlete and enthusi- yachtsman and angler that he is, ban the literary recluse. He is about 6 feet 9 inches in height, has brown hair and eyes and a tawny moustache, and Is embellished with a singular hesitation in speech which is noticeable in conversation, but which leaves him when he strikes an interesting theme or makes an after-dinner speech. lie.

Holland, the actor, who is very deaf, called him away from table at the Lamb's Club to discuss a gambol that Holland was getting dp. Holland was busily unfolding a schema when Nat Goodwin. called out from the other room: "I don't see how a deaf man and a stuttering man can carry on uch a conversation "Easily enough," retorted Carleton.

"Dud-deaf man's doing ail the tut-talk ing, and stut-stuttering man's doing all the "Kuk-conie in here, William," said fai-lton to Bill Nve one dav in the World office; "I want to tut-talk to you five minutes, and it won't tut-take me over hub-half an hour." In the report of the California Academy of Sciences for April, 1872, there is a description of a donble-tluid barometer invented by him. The Scientific American in March, 1SS6, gave two pages to an illustration oz liia electrical device for ascertaining from the superintendent's office the percentage of explosive gases in any part ot a coalmine.

FOREIGN MARKETS. Lojcdoit. Dee. 30. There was no demand for discount during the past week.

The quotations were a for three months and per cent for short. The abundance of money and scarcity of bills caused discount bouses to take good paper at even lower rates, but the decision of the Bank of England directors not to reduce the bank's rate, combined with the renewal of tbe German and Spanish demands for gold, led to a stiffening of rates. Yesterday Berlin drew i 060,000 in gold from the Bank of England. On the Stock during the week, business was fairly active, considering the approaching; of the holidays, and the general toue was eood. The chief point of interest was tbe revival in American railroads.

A quiet but steady flow of buying throughout tbe week strengthened prices without causing any notable advance. Yesterday's business became distinctly animated, dealings both before tbe ottiotal elose and In tbe street baring tbe character of buying for speculation as well as for investment. The run of business Indicates that the first stage of tbe long expected boom has begun. Every kind of stock gained on tbe day. leaving tbe following increases on tbe week: Union Paolfio UHf Wabash preferred 2, Central Paolfio 2, Wabash debentures Erie 1)4, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe IX, Denver and Bio Grande preferred.

Louisville and Nashville, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio and Norfolk and Western preferred 1 each. New York, Ontario and Western and Nortnern Paolno each. Canadian seeuries closed flat. Grand Trunk ordinary: and second fell on the week. Mexican: railway was firm, ordinary aud seconds advanced In foreign securities the tendency was better.

Dec. 20. Business on the Bourse the past week was restricted, but tbe tendency ot prioes was towards firmness. Three per cent rentes advanced 15 centimes on the week; Credit Fonder shares 3Hj francs. Rio Tintos lit and Banque de Paris shares ISf.

A quarrel is proceeding between tbe racial Drokers of the Bourse and the "Conlis-siers," or dealers on the open market. The former are trying to curtail tbe business of the "Conllsslers" and want bankers to transact business solely through them. The Conllsslers now constitute tbe most powerful factor on the Bourse, doing business cheaper and quicker than the official brokers and they threaten to boycott Arms submitting to tbe demands of the official brokers. The Conllsslers are so strong that they must win, but in the meantime tbo squabble interferes with dealings. Berlin.

Deo. 2a On the Bourse during the past week prices were steady with a tendency to firmness. There was an increased demand for foreign seourities, while bank and industrial securities were weak. Tbe mammoth steamer State of Missouri, Captain Charles Church, is receiving to leare to-morrow for Cincinnati and all way laudings. She arrired yesterday afternoon with a fair freight, after putting out several hundred tons under way. The Red River Line steamer Garland arrired yesterday, and will leave on Wednesday for Cousbatta and all way landings on Red river. Captain P. A.
