JP) Emma, the best known mallard in this area, is dead. Seven years ago the duck sought shelter in Preston Osborn's wild fowl sanctuary. Osborn petted her put a band on her leg. Came chilly weather and Emma migrated, but she returned each spring and fall. The Federal Biological Survey, wishing to study Emma, had Osborn clip her wings.

But civilization proved too perilous for Emma. A deer stepped on her. I JJ have seen service in the sporadic cross channel artillery duels, these authorities say. Just when the new German line may have been started is not known in London but it cannot be very far advanced, these authorities point out, since the British raiding parties have been able to make at least nine daring thrusts into German-held soil. Slipping across on trawlers and fishing smacks, the raiders have dashed into the blacked out enemy lines on a several-fold mission.

One of the most important is to bolster French morale and worry the Germans. It is held good military psychology to keep the Nazi legions, thinly -trung out over a thousand mile front, in a "perpetual state of apprehension." Perpetration of sabotage and capture of prisoners are the two other main responsibilities of the brave young English volunteers. Many experts expect Britains's generals to choose France or one of the low countries as the scene for a major assault. Others talk of the "back door" through the Balkins or Italy if and when Mussolini is knocked out of the war. .1 St.

i7Pi British suicide squadrons who are reliably repor ed to have staged motorcycle invasions of 5erman-occupied France as far as Amiens have set the military dopesters to speculating on where the British high command will make the big followup push if and when the time comes. Hitler's own ideas on the subject were reflected in reports current in British military circles shortly before I left London three weeks ago that the Germans had begun to build a defensive line of fortifications along th English Channel. Military authorities point out it would be a fairly simple operation to bolster ita firing power by transferring the powerful French guns from the Maginot line. Some of the Maginot guns already have been moved up to the coast and The four-motored long range patrol bombers manufactured by Consolidated have a range of 5009 miles. i For jittery, nerroui beadarhea take Capudine.

On the sixty-fifth day of the sixty-eight day session Governor Cooper in a message the legislature said: "I respectfully recommend the abolition of the poll tax as a prerequisite to voting in primary elections. This shoul be done immediately. Since the constitution of our state -equired the payment of a poll tax in the general election I recommend that this requirement be abolished by constitutional amendment." Here is the record of what had happened to repeal measures applying to the tax between the time the legislature convened and Cooper's final message wa delivered, as shown by the 1839 House and Senate journals: Rep. Richardson (Davidson) introduced the first repealer in the House (H. B.

Advocates of repeal of the poll tax as a prerequisite to voting In Tennessee, finding little open opposition to such action by the 1941 legislature, are warily examining their record to discover "who killed cock robin" in 1939. Examining the political campaigns last year George Dempster, iinsuccessful Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Arthur Bruce, Republican candidates in the general election, advocated poll tax repeal. Governor Cooper brushed this aside as a campaign issue, however, pointing out that he was on record as favorable to repeal and stating he would sign such a measure if passed by the legislature. E. H.

Crump, Memphis political leader, who supported the successful candidates for states offices, also said the poll tax law should be repealed. The record shows that Cooper endorsed poll tax repeal in his 1938 campaign and that in his final message to the 1939 legislature former Gov. Gord--i Browning said: "All seem to be agreed that the poll tax as a prerequisite for voting should be removed in our state. I heartily concur in this and recommend that it be abolished. It has grown to be an agency of corruption instead of a safeguard to fair During the 1539 session three poll tax bills and a resolution for a constitutional amendment for the same purpose wire introduced in the House and five repeal bills IS A PUBLIC MENACE SNEEZINC not only saps your strength but sprays millions of germs about you.

(By The Associated Press) Hamilton county, brightest of the state's four most populous counties in 1940's traffic safety record, today counted two dead in highway accidents in 1941 with the new year less than a week old. They were the only deaths in the metropolitan areas this year. One of the fatalities occurred new year's day to put the southeastern Tennessee county off to a discouraging start in its campaign to reduce its highway deaths which totaled 15 last year. While Chattanooga passed its 109th consecutive day free from traffic fatalities, it did not wholly escape the tragedy of automobile accidents.

Within a few miles of their homes three young Chatta-noogans were killed when their car, struck in a three-way collision, plunged over an embankment on the Fort Oglethorpe, military reservation. Elsewhere in the state, the larger cities Nashville. Knoxville and Memphis with their surrounding counties were free from auto fatalities for the first five days of the new year. At the same time in 1940 none had reported any deaths. During 1940.
