RELIGION Salisbury, Md. Saturday, June 22, 1996 Page 6 THE DAILY TIMES EMITOS: SonShine Club CHURCH ACTIVITIES a hit with area residents vJ" 'i of Bethesda United Methodist Church, explained that Daisy Cantwell "got us started last August and we enjoy it." At the conclusion of the singing fellowship after lunch, Jefferson and her companion rushed off to do volunteer work. "We'll be a little late," she explained, "but we didn't want to miss it." Dorothy Parsons is a charter member. "I haven't missed one time," she said. Parsons said that she likes to be with people.

A widow for 13 years, she's not often alone because she has nieces and nephews to baby-sit for and she obviously looks forward to spending time with them. But members of the Son-Shine Club "are more my own age group." Her sister, Nannie Potts, her chauffeur on these occasions, enjoys it, too. There is time set aside to remember them in prayer. Somebody who might be "going that way" afterward will often take a plate. A drawing for door prizes sends many in attendance home with some useful pantry item.

And usually there are one or two items, from soup to soap, -in sufficient quantity that everyone can take home one of these "shared blessings." The group's motto is "Bring SonShine into someone else's life." And, as Dixon reminded the group, "so often in doing that we ourselves are blessed." engaged in handicrafts and enjoy a visit with one another. Heath explained that the Son-Shine Club "brings people together to help one another. A lot of elderly people never get out of the house otherwise. Everyone enjoys it." Clearly the label "elderly" doesn't apply to her, in spite of her silvery-gray tresses. She was quite lively, talking animatedly to her friends.

As happens often in society, eating a meal is really an excuse for visiting with people whose company we enjoy. Gordon Willing has been at the last several club meetings. He and his wife, Anne, drove up from Chance because Janet Cook and Marianne Wallace, sisters and friends of the Willings, encouraged them to come. "I look forward to meeting old friends," he said, "and the food doesn't hurt." Cook agreed. "I come for the fellowship with Christian folks," she said, "and the food's good, too." One hopes that Frances Smith and the other church women who prepared the meal overheard their appreciative comments.

They served baked ham, cabbage and potatoes, pepper steak with rice, and macaroni and cheese, made the way it should be, moist and flavorful and baked until it's just a little crispy on the top. Beatrice Jefferson, a member SENIORS, from Page 5 ronment, newcomers soon become regulars. And they invite their friends. Blanche Heath, a member of Faith Community Church, has been enjoying the Christian fellowship ever since it started about three years ago. She's one of the regular workers who helps to set up the tables and make things ready.

And she keeps inviting her friends. At a recent gathering she sat at a table surrounded by her "guests." Dixon explained that a number of their regulars are living on fixed incomes and some are dealing with the physical prob-leihs of aging. Going out to eat at a restaurant can be expensive. This is not. But it still gives people a chance to go out and socialize.

Women outnumber men, not atypical for an over-65 group. Some of the them look as though they've just been turned out of a bandbox. Having a reason to dress up is kind of nice. One of Heath's guests comes often" enough to count herself a regular. Marian Dunn explained that her church, the First Church of the Nazarene on Johnson Street in Salisbury, had a similar program.

"It's nice to get your friends together for dinner," she said. The ability to contact a wider audience means that peripheral religions that were in danger of drying up and disappearing from a lack of followers can attract believers from around the globe, said Mark Kellner, author of God on the Internet. "The Druids used to be a joke, but now there really is a group of Druids out there," he said referring to pagans trying to bring back pre-Christian beliefs. "The Internet is going to have an impact around the world in the way people worship." Most religious Web sites are less than a year old and few on-line missionaries have any figures to show if they have attracted large numbers of new believers. is almost as prevalent as virtual sex. A search of Web sites found 42,765 that mentioned religion while 46,910 had references to sex.

The Rev. David E. Courter of the Independent Catholic Church International a denomination that split from Roman Catholics centuries ago is also bullish about Internet evangelism. The Church has about 10 parishes in the United States. Courter, who also works as a computer consultant, is planning to say Mass on line and allow people to consecrate Communion through their computers.

Parishioners will simply put unleavened bread in front of their computer screens. "I think that there's a lot of people who wouldn't attend Mass any other way," he said.
