Physicians Think Medical Shows Belong on TV Both the lay public and most physicians of the nation believe that medical educational programs have a definite place on television and should be expanded according to the results of a series of surveys announced today The'surveys were based on two NBC television network pro' grams presented in June from the annual meeting of the Ameh- lean Medical Association at Chicago For the first time the lay public and thousands of doctors from coast to coast at-home got their first view of the scientific exhibits of the AMA meeting The first program also included -the Showing of part of a surgical operation direct from Wesley Memorial Hospital It was the first time "that so actual operation in progress had been televised for the lay public Made by AMA The surveys were made by the AMA and Smith Kline and French Laboratories Philadelphia pharmaceutical firm which sponsored the telecasts In one survey 143 Philadelphia doctors were telephoned the morning after the first program lirty-one had seen the program sly one had negative comment the others being favorable In a second survey doctors were asked in person about the pro- grams Of 121 who had viewed at least one of the programs 116 or 96 percent considered the program worthwhile In a third survey 8574 ques- -tionnaires were sent to doctors There were 1373 replies 722 or 53 per cent of the doctors responding saw both or one of the programs Ninety-four per cent found the programs interesting 74 per cenVthought the programs useful to the doctor 62 per cent said their patients
