Considered one of the nation's premier quarterback tutors, Gottfried had already recruited Genilla, who passed for 3,607 yards last season at San Mateo (Calif.) Junior College, and Cleveland high school star Lan Wanke. Gottfried, it appeared, considered Congemi nothing more than an all-too-visible reminder of two of the most disappointing seasons in Pitt football history.

"I knew I had to win his confidence," Congemi said. "He approached it the way any new head coach would have approached it. He didn't know anything about me. He'd never me play, except on film."
