Jaguars' Brunell cashes in with five-year, deal By The Associated Press Mark Brunell, who took the Jacksonville Jaguars to the AFC championship game in his first full season as a starter, signed a five-year contract that makes him one of the NFL's highest-paid players. "There is some increased pressure with a contract like this," the 26-year-old quar 172 consecutive games during his 14-year career. He helped the Patriots win the AFC title last season and played for the Giants when they won Super Bowls in 1987 and 1991. Rams St. Louis defensive end James E.

Harris has been indicted on charges of being the "money man" behind a conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Harris, 29, was named in a suppressed indictment released in East St. Louis, 111., Officials said Harris appeared in federal court in Peoria, where he was released on bond pending a hearing Aug. 8 before a federal judge. The formal charge against Harris is "aiding and abetting a conspiracy to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine." The Rams said they knew only that Harris had left their training camp in Macomb on Monday morning.

Redskins Washington signed defensive end Kenard Brunell Bills' Smith arrested for DUI By The Associated Press VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after police in his hometown said they found him sleeping at the wheel with his car running. Smith was slumped behind the wheel at an intersection at 6:21 a.m. Sunday, Virginia Beach police spokesman Mike Carey said Monday. Smith's 1996 4-door Mercedes was in a traffic lane.

Smith, the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year last season, has been holding out of training camp in a contract dispute with the Bills. He has been fined $85,000 by Buffalo so far, $5,000 for every day he misses practice. "We want to check all the facts before we make any kind of comment," team spokesman Scott Berchtold said. "As an organization, we just found out about the alleged incident. Until we have a chance to check all the facts, we don't want to issue a statement." Telephone calls to Smith's agent, Leigh Steinberg, were not returned.

A call to Smith's cellular phone was unsuccessful. Smith has been angry for months about what he calls unfair treatment by the Bills, who offered the 34-year-old, nine-time Pro Bowl selection a five-year contract worth $22 million, including a $5 million signing bonus. Police in went to check on Smith after a citizen told them there was a man slumped behind the wheel of his car, W' -w Lang, the No. 17 overall selection from Miami, to a five-year, $5.78 million contract. The deal includes a $2.5 million signing bonus with' a $435,000 salary for 1997.

"We need him to play well and play well early, there's no question. That's why we drafted him," coach Norv Turner said. "If he can get to where he can handle it, yeah, he's got enough time to be the im i n-M AP Laserphoto Buffalo Bills Bruce Smith: Arrested for driving under the influence in Virginia Beach, Va. Lang terback said Monday. "I'm ready to face that." The new contract is for $30.5 million and includes a $10 million signing bonus.

Brunell signed Sunday night, just three days after Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre signed a seven-year contract worth $42 million. "I don't think Brett signing had anything to do with it," Brunell said. "I don't compare myself to other quarterbacks. I don't say, 'Well, I'm making this and I should be making If you play long enough, those things take care of themselves." After two years as a backup to Favre in Green Bay, Brunell was traded to the Jaguars on the eve of their first draft and spent his first year battling Steve Beuerlein for the starting job during a 4-12 season. But Brunell blossomed into one of the more dangerous quarterbacks in the league last year, passing for a league-high 4,367 yards with 19 touchdowns as the Jaguars improved to 9-7.

"Mark Brunell is an integral part of our football team," coach Tom Coughlin said. "It is critical to acquire and keep the best players, and that's what we have done." Jets William Roberts, a guard who played for coach Bill Parcells with the New York Giants and New England Patriots, signed a one-year deal worth an estimated $300,000. He is expected to fill the void created when incumbent starter Harry Galbreath suddenly retired after nine seasons. "In all honesty didn't want to go back to the future," Parcells said. "But I had to get somebody to hold the fort here right now and I know he can do it.

This guy started for a championship team last year." Roberts, who turns 35 on Aug. 5, has started apparently passed out, Carey said. Smith also was charged with refusing to take a breath test, but was otherwise cooperative with the arresting officers, Carey said. His license was suspended for seven days because he refused to take the breath test. Smith was released on a $750 personal recognizance bond.

He is due to appear in Virginia Beach Traffic Court on Sept. 2. If convicted of both charges, Smith could face a fine, the suspension of his driver's license for up to a year or restrictions on his license, such as limitations allowing him only to drive to and from work, Carey said. Smith was suspended for the first four games of the 1988 season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. NFL spokeswoman Leslie Hammond would not comment on Smith or any specific player.

Players convicted in alcohol-related violations are subject to fines, she said. The fines typically have been one-half of a one-game check. Under Smith's current contract, that would amount to $68,750. starter." Lang was expected to arrive at training camp late today. His presence is much-needed, given that the Redskins were 28th against the run last year and are short on depth because tackle Sean Gilbert is holding out and several other linemen are injured.

Chiefs Kansas City released defensive tackle Dan Saleaumua because of salary cap considerations after he refused to take a pay cut. Saleaumua, 32, was scheduled to make $1.7 million this season. "We tried to exhaust all possible ways to keep him," Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheinier said. "It became very evident that it was not going to become possible. The bottom line was he would not take a cut.

That was it.".
