Monday Evening, April 26, 1937 LOGANSPORT PHAROS-TRIBUNE Harlan County Shows No Signs Of Bloodshed And Terrorism jBfmWtflmmrnmHiiifl 11111111 1 1 1 iiiiiiua i TOMORROW IS -Howe, HARLAX, April 26--(UP)-The beautiful mountains, streams and woodlands that surround this notorious southeastern Kentucky town give no suggestion of the long-standing labor warfare that has advertised it throughout the nation as "Bloody Harlan." Harlan, a modestly progressive town of 8.000, is the county seat of a community where for years human life has been held in such slight regard that it is possibly the nearest modern approach to the wild west days of Red Dog or Dead Man's Gulch. It is located on the Kentucky- Virginia line in the Cnriberland mountains, the heart of one of the country's outstanding scenic attractions. The current senate committee investigation of Harlan county mining operations has focused attention on the wholesale aspect of murder and intimidation here. The facte brought out by investigators are somewhat hideous to the thousands of Harlan residents who been able to raise their families in an atmosphere of good schools, churches and the same recreational facilities enjoyed by most other towns of comparable size. Murder Still a Problem Murder IE still an alarming problem in Harlan county, according to Sheriff T.

R. Middleton--but not nearly the problem it used to be. In 1932 there were 64 murders in the county. Last year there were only.six. This year there nave been five so far.

Coal mining is the chief industry, with two score operators employing about 16,000 men who, although unorganised, work at a basic wage rate of $5.60 a day. Harlan coal operators state that an average of 5.000 cars of coal arc leaving the field weekly. Should this average be sustained, they say, the field this year will eclipse" of PAGE SEVEN. DAY IN The United Press correspondent here was unable to find a miner willing to say he had been deprived of "freedom of speech" or had been dominated by operators. The cross section ot opinion on mine unionization among Harlan county miners is summed up in the oft-repeated, phrase: "We wish to be let alone." Few miners live in the city ot Harlan.

Most live in little mining camps or towns such as Cumberland' with a population of 3,500 and Lynch, with a population of 11,000, where the world's largest coal tipple is said to be located and where a coal car can be loaded in three minutes: Verda, with a population of 1,500 and Benham a population of 3.600. Modest, Modem Homes Most miners' homes, owned h) the companies for which thts work, are lurnlshed with modern conveniences including electric lights and running water. The miners' families provide their own furniture and heat. Homes in the wealthier mining camps are ter furnished. Besides mining, the leading industries are lumbering and -farming.

There are a dozen large wholesale houses. Since 1930. the population has increased about 20 per cent, according to estimates. The town of Harlan has grown by 2,000 in 10 years. Two-thirds ol the residents of the town of Harlan own their homes, the majority of which are ot brick-stone or semi-brick construction.

A few are show places of typical Kentucky hospitality. The Harlan 'business district is eight blocks long and contains 105 business houses. The tallest building is six stories. There are two hotels and two theaters. The town has a public library, a waterworks system, and 12 miljs of paved streets.

The city and county school system is modern and well-equipped. AMERICA'S GREATEST SALE Ward Week Offers You Your Greatest Opportunity to Save on Home Furnishings'.
