This week Babe Ruth baseball got underway -and this weekend sets things in motion for Little League, the Logansport Merchants and the Logansport American Legion team. Although Mantle, Kaline, Banks and Mays won't be completely forgotten, the Sweets, Hewitts, Hirsh- bergers and other local baseball players will start sharing sports page news with them.

Certainly the calibar of ball played in the local leagues is far from what you might sec in Chicago's big league parks, but who cares? Your support is needed in backing these teams. Whether you have a son in either Little League or Babe Ruth, or a neighbor's boy playirtg with the Falcons or Merchants, get nut and see at least one game a week, more if possl blc. The Little League and Babe Ruth have not had much trouble in the attendance department for several years, but last year toward the end of the season the Falcons and Merchants weren't threatening any records with overflowing crowds. The Merchants are as close to organized professional baseball as Logansporl will probably ever get, There are some outstanding players on the club and you'll see some great baseball. In the Central Indiana Baseball League are several of the top college stars in Indiana.

The Merchants themselves have Butch Jones who is up for all- league honors in the Indiana Collegiate Conference. The Falcons are a team composed of the best high school players in this part of the county. Coach Bob Hunter has already said he is very optimistic about the summer prospects and expects an excellent season: Get out and support these teams. You'll have lot of fun and see a lot of good baseball. And who knows, maybe in a few years while at Wrigley Field you tan say to that guy sitting next to you, "I saw that outfielder when he was playing Little League back in Logansport." DICK WATTS Twelve Mile Wins To Tigers, Braves TWELVE MILE-The Tigers defeated the Cubs 7-6 and the Braves nicked the Yankees 7-4 in a pair of Youth League baseball games here Wednesday night.

Rick Pickens swatted a two-run homer and a triple to' pace the Tigers in the opening game victory. Stewart Wiler had three singles to lead the Cubs. Mike Martin clouted a double and triple to pace the Braves in the nightcap while Bob Skinner got the only two hits for the Yanks, a double and single. Summary: Tigers 7 4 1 Cubs 6 6 ,,3 Pickens and Hook, Dennis; Hitzeman, Hoover and Wiler. Braves 7 10 4 Yankees 4 2 2 Minthorn and Martin; Staller end Gearhart.

The six owners, who wound up three sessions on several negative notes, agreed to adjourn their annual meeting until Friday in New York. One of the main stumbling blocks was the future makeup-of the Eastern Professional Hockey League, which is scheduled to undergo a major overhaul before next season. The tight NHL league, which embraces franchises in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Boston, Chicago and Detroit, closed out its talks here by: --Delaying further business until the Eastern Professional League makeup is straigntened out.

--Drafting 21 amateur players who were both under 17 as of May this year and who were not already the property of some NHL club but refusing to divulge who they were. --Closing their annual business session to the press after several years of holding open meetings. --Holding its most lackluster and disappointing intra-league draft in many years. looked sharp again in a morning workout- and'was being quoted as low as 2-5 in the early, line. The prospective bridegroom, 25, will try to recapture the welter crown from champion Luis Rodriguez in their nationally televised return title fight at Madison Square Garden. And the betting odds favor Griffith at 13-10. "She's a knockout," said Emile, with worship voice as he spoke of his 20-year-old fiancee, Esther Taylor, a New York secretary. "And as a wedding present I'll have to give her a knockout over Rodriguez--a title knockout." Griffith, who returned, here from the i Catskill Mountains.

Wednesday night after his fina! two training rounds, said he also craves a knockout victory "because of the bum decision they gave me at Los Angeles on March 21, when' they made a present of my title to Rodriguez." He declared, "There'll be no decision this time!"
