(AP) Quarterback George Blanda kicked four field goals, including one in the fourth period, in leading the Houston Oilers to a 19-17 upset victory Sunday over the American Football League champion Buffalo Bills. The victory cut Buffalo's Eastern Division lead over Houston to IMt games. Blanda also tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to halfback Ode Barrell as the Oilers posted their fourth victory against three losses.

The setback was the second for the Bills, winner of six games. Defensive back W. K. Hicks paved the way for Blanda's game-winning eight-yard field goal. He intercepted Buffalo quarterback Daryle Lamonica's pass and raced to the Bills 23.

2f 'Hi if Blanda tossed a 21-yard pass to PITTSBURGH (AP) Bill Nelsen, who had passed for just one touchdown this season, tossed three scoring passes against Dallas to pace the rejuvenated Pittsburgh Steelers to a 22-13 victory in a National Football League game Sunday. Nelsen connected on the three TD passes in the second quarter, giving the Steelers a 19-6 halftime lead. He threw two yards to halfback Dick Hoak and 20 and 72 yards to flanker Gary Ballman. Late in the fourth quarter, Nelsen's passing set up a Pittsburgh field goal from the 18 by Mike Clark. Marv Woodson's interception of a Don Meredith pass stalled a Cowboy drive with Pittsburgh leading 19-13 and enabled the Steelers to drive in for the insurance field goal.

The victory was Pittsburgh's second after five straight losses. It was Dallas' fifth loss against two victories. Dallas took a 6-0 first quarter lead when Don Meredith tossed two yards to J.D. Smith. John Hilton's recovery of a fumbled punt on the Dallas 23 set up Nelsen's 20-yarder to Ballman.

Dallas added a touchdown in the third quarter when Meredith hit Pete Gent with an eight-yard scoring toss. It followed a blocked punt by the Cowboys' Jethro Pugh that rolled out of bounds on the Pittsburgh 6. A crowd of 53,717 turned out to see the Jets, who were in direct competition with the National League's New York Giants, playing the St.

Louis Cardinals at home. The Jets, who had been unable to score more than 24 points in any game this season, put 10 points on the scoreboard in less than 2V2 minutes early in the second period, then closed out the quarter with 14 points in the final two minutes. With Denver leading 3-0 on Gary Kroner's first-period field goal, Ralph Baker intercepted a Mickey Slaughter pass on the Denver 30-yard line and returned it to the 16. One play later, Mike Taliaferro hit Don Maynard with a 14-yard touchdown pass. On Denver's next offensive play, Larry Grantham intercepted another Slaughter attempt on the 33, and Jim Turner eventually kicked a 46-yard field goal.

Only 2:17 had elapsed since the touchdown. Late in the period, after an exchange of punts, Snell' ripped off 27 and 10-yard runs on consecutive plays, capping a 72-yard drive that made it 17-3. The touchdown came with 1:53 left in the half. Two plays later Ray Abruz-zese picked off a Slaughter pass and returned 11 yards to the 39. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) Boston's Babe Parilli threw two touchdown passes to end Gino Cappelletti Sunday to lead the previously winless Patriots to a 22-6 victory over the previously undefeated San Diego Chargers.

Cappelletti, who also kicked two field goals, teamed with Parilli on a 46-yard scoring play with 11:52 left to play, clinching the victory. Boston is now 1-6-1. The Chargers are 5-1-2. Parilli hit Cappelletti with a 29-yard touchdown pass late in the first period after the Patriots had opened scoring with a safety. The Chargers were shut out until 7:08 left to play when fullback Keith Lincoln plunged over from the 1.

The Chargers score was set up by a 61-yard pass from reserve quarterback Don Breaux to Don Norton. Cappelletti widened the Boston margin to 22-0 with a 33-yard field goal after Tom Addison stole a Breaux pass with nine minutes left. The Patriot offensive attack, absent in a 13-13 tie with the Chargers two weeks ago, dominated the top-ranked San Diego offense. Boston red-dogged to throw John Hadl repeatedly for losses.
