10 THE SALISBURY TIMES Monday, May 1, 1961 More Like A Football Game Hoopla Reigns In Big Fight For Firm Control By GEORGE BOWEN BALTIMORE (AP) This is Wall Street? The subdued, innocuous looking business man sedately chalking up another million dollars? Not at the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Alleghany Corporation today. It was more like a college football rally, a national political convention, a rodeo. At stake are billions. I The ball room of the Lord Baltimore Hotel is the playing field. It is decorated with rally signs of two sides seeking control of the corporation with seats for 1,200 onlookers.

The hoopla has been going on since Sunday. John W. Murchison (pronunced Murkisn) arrived with a fanfare and two private railroad cars of help. The contest was without parallel in American history, overshadowing the duels of and oil barons of a half century ago. The principals, Alleghany Chairman Allan P. Kirby and Texas financier John D.

Murchison, his challenger, both professed optimism. Kirby inherited a Woolworth 5-and-10 cent store fortune; Murchison has a fortune built on oil. May Take Time But Murchison and close allies of Kirby, agreed that it might take two weeks of painstaking scrutiny of stockholder votes to determine the outcome of the annual meeting of shareholders. de Neither side claimed a majority of the 9,844,970 common shares eligible to be voted. The Kirby group is on record as owning outright about 3,300,000, the Murchison group 2,850,000.

Each side also held sizeable, batches of proxies from pendent stockholders gathered in seven weeks of intensive, nationwide solicitation. Hospital To Be Open For Tours Sunday CRISFIELD National Hospital Week will be observed at the Edward W. McCready Memorial Hospital Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. A hospital spokesman said the public is invited to visit the hospital that day for an inspection tour and to learn how the hospital is progressing. The hospital administrator and a number of directors will be present to conduct the visitors through the institution. The Junior Auxiliary Board will decorate the hospital for the 0c- casion, and light refreshments will be served by the Senior Board on a table covered with the $900 monogrammed tab'ecloth donated by community and county citizens, and residents of other states.

Also on display will be a beautiful quilt, with which the ladies of the Auxiliary Boards are raising funds to purchase another piece of modern equipment for the hospital. Navy To Try Balloon Again PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP)--The Navy plans. to make a fourth try Thursday to launch a huge manned balloon from the deck of the aircraft carrier Antietam. Three previous attempts were called off because of bad weather high above the launch area in Gulf of Mexico about 100 miles out from Pensacola.

Thunderstorm activity aloft was blamed for postponement of today's scheduled ascent. Dr. Gladstone Named To College Committee EXMORE Dr. Joseph E. Gladstone is one of several Virginians recently named to the executive committee of the Parents and Friends Association of Hampden Sidney College, in Hampden Sydney, Va.

Dr. Gladstone a well known local physician was elected at the Association's recent meeting. Home To Be On Tour Here ghany from the 68-year-old Allan Price Kirby, Private Rail Cars Murchison, wearing a sports jacket, was taken from his train with his entourage in two buses to the hotel. The buses sported signs "The eyes of Texas (and all America) on you." The Kirbyites arrived in typical subdued Wall Street style. Charles T.

Ireland, their president, came on the train with the flamboyant Murchisons. But they planted excitement by delivering their votes in an armored truck. "It wasn't that we feared hijacking by the Murchisons, only to guarantee in case of an accident they wouldn't be burned or blown away," explained Kirby spokesman. The spokesmen were all over the lot. There were representatives of public relations lawyers for each side.

Also detectives, both private and city. They were there, said spokesmen, to protect the many millionaires, not the votes. 57 Reporters There The press was in abundance. The best estimate was that there were 57 reporters, although no one would guarantee that there were not more "accredited" correspondents. The lobby of the hotel, first rendezvous of stockholders, pitched as the preliminary battleground.

Each side had a desk ready sign up combatants. Facing each other, one wisecracker said they are "shooting spitballs of proxies at each Murchison greeted both camps. "You fellows have any proxy material I can use?" he kidded the opposition. Put Up Cards The eve of battle found each side putting up cards, much like collegians raising them on opposite sides of the gridiron. The Murchsisons scored first, with a lobby placard deriding an April 20 dividend of five cents declared by the Alleghany Corporation, its first in 31 years.

"Chicken minimized the Murchison placard. Kirby forces, viewing the sign upon arrival, promptly summoned a painter and ordered a rival placard depicting the past Alleghany record of reduced debt and other figures purportedly in its favor. Intense feeling of the show was demonstrated dramatically by Walter Spradley, a 39-year-old Texas lawyer who has been working feverishly in behalf of votes for Murchison. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Culver on Quantico will be one of eight homes to be open for the Salisbury Art Guild's annual Home and Art Tour May 13. A charming brick Colonial home with a modern influence and beautifully landscaped grounds is the first impression for visitors entering the driveway.

When their friends speak of the Culvers, foremost in their minds is the amazing fact that Mr. Culver has made most of the furniture in the house. It would be hard for an amateur antiques collector to establish the real antiques from Mr. Culver's reproductions. copied from museum pieces.

For example, in the living room there is a Chippendale wing chair copied from an original owned by the late Ira Messick of Whie Haven. The Culvers cherish the block front Stoddard desk, reproduced in the minutest detail. A grandmother's clock stands on the landing, cute and quaint as the old lady would. Tilt-top tables with bird cage and dish tops are scattered about. Perhaps most outstanding is the handsome dining room with corner cupboard.

All but one small table in this room was made by Mr. Culver. The interesting woodwork and handsome wall paper give a feeling of rest and peace. A most modern kitchen is tied in with Colonial with a hutch cupboard and table made Culver. There's a collection of Ironstone china.

It is difficult for one to decide whether the house was built: for the furniture or if the furniture was made for the house. But they were certainly planned for each other. NEA8 Use Caution On I am 20 pounds overweight and my husband wants to take me to a doctor who gives shots to deaden the hunger pangs, make it easier to shun food and help you to lose weight faster. He also thins the blood a little by prescribing doses of salts and giving other shots to, increase water elimination. Do you think this is a good idea? Please answer soon SO I can get an early start. A Dear, dear lady, this pro-1 gram for weight reduction makes very little sense. Drugs that deaden the appetite can be taken by mouth and, even then, recent studies have shown them to be of little value unless taken in such large doses that you'd be as jumpy as the proverbial cat on the hot tin roof.

Water elimination doesn't thin the blood. As a matter of fact, a dose of salts or a shot of a drug that increases water nation would cause your blood to become more concentrated, if it had any effect at all. And one or the other the blood would way Weight Shots be restored to normal the next time you took fluid of any kind. I'm sure your husband had nothing but good intentions when he suggested a visit to this doctor. But you remember the name of the place that's paved with good intentions.

Q- My baby chews paper. Is this due to a vitamin deficency? A Not if he chews on my columns. Q- Is it true that cancer is caused by taking aspirin? A Of course not. At one time or another, almost every one of us takes a few doses of aspirin. Some of us later develop cancer.

But to say that aspirin causes cancer is as silly as to say that cancer is due to eating breakfast or anything else that the cancer victim remembers having done every day.
