a a a a the TV His Name Is Gunn (For Hire) By EVE STARR "Peter Gunn" is the somewhat coy title of a brand new mysteryadventure series concerning the life and times of a private eye. Actually, the original title of the series was "Gunn for Hire," but this was objected to by Paramount, which once made a called "Gun for Hire." As played by Craig Stevens, Peter Gunn is quite a refinement of the old radio and early TV school of private eye. Come to think of it, Gunn isn't a private eye at all. In fact, judging the pilot episode, it's difficult to tell what he is. His name is Gunn and he's for hire always on the cleaner side of the law.

He is a handsome, tall and rather slender man with dark, close-cropped hair, who wears a nicely tailored narrowlapel suit and doesn't own a trench coat. A Natural Hangout He is' nicely spoken, too, and treats the English language with a respect rarely accorded it by the run-of-the-mill hero. Gunn's hangout is a neighborhood ginmill known as Mother's and presided over by Hope Emerson, a salty character actress whose rough exterior covers a heart of pure spun gold. Naturally. The entertainment at Mother's consists of a small modern jazz combo, which affords the series its quite-different background music, and a girl singer named Edie Hart, played by Lola Albright.

Miss Albright has been in Hollywood for some time now and knows her way around the sultry romantic angle of the screen. As Edie, she plays a girl in love with Gunn and doubtful that she will ever be able to pin him down to a date at the marriage license bureaugs, Too She sings (quite well, too), makes passes at the hero and sometimes is even helpful in getting Gunn out of the kind of scrapes such characters have get themselves into in the name of entertainment. I am not at all sure that Stevens is going to be able to carry this load for an entire season. The truth of the matter is that he looks entirely too much like a nice guy, and, as Leo Durocher has so often pointed out, nice guys finish last. Stevens, whose advantage over Durocher is that he has script writers, will never finish last.

But you just don't quite believe it when he takes on two strong armed thugs on a stairway and tosses them both over the bannister. But that's a quibble. I think the viewers are going to like Peter Gunn. Stevens (married to Alexis Smith) will appeal to the women, Lola (recently unmarried from Jack Carson) will appeal to the men and the modern jazz combo will appeal to the teenagers. As for the show itself, you still can't beat that grand old story good guy beats bad guy and justice triumphs.

9, 1958 TV Keynotes: Fast With Cane By STEVEN SCHEUER One of the few Western heroes left to build a series on will debut Oct. 8 on NBC. It will feature Bat Masterson, crony of Wyatt Earp, buffalo hunter, boxing promoter and uty sheriff. Handsome, dark-haired movie actor Gene Barry, who plays Bat, calls him "The Rhett Butler of Tombstone." know how he got the name of Bat, don't you?" Barry began. "Young Masterson was in a shootout over a girl.

The girl threw herself in front of Masterson, was killed and he was the pelvis. From that time' on Bat walked with a slight limp and carried a cane. He got so fast rapping skulls with his cane, soreheads began calling him Hopes Catches Barry is playing Masterson as a sport wearing a derby and flicking a cane. It is, of course, hoped that the kids will immediately don derbies and canes and eat plenty of the sponsor's cheese. The cane bit is old hat for Barry.

"I'm basically, a dance man," "Hollywood doesn't know this, but it's about time. Max Reinhardt taught me how to use the You see first, I played the Bat in 'Rosalinda', how do you like that for a tiein? and I was this gay kind of guy walking out on stage, twirling my cane and whistling. It was a grand entrance a voom entrance." Barry and his cane are going to be busy rapping heads on Wednesday nights instead of dropping villains with a six-shooter. "Bat Dear Molly MOLLY MAYFIELD RUN-DON'T WALK! DEAR MRS. MAYFIELD: I am 16 and my mother 1s divorced.

She took out of school year and made me get daist a job to support, us. She hangs around 8 day with her boy friends. Please advise. SCHOOL'S OUT DEAR SCHOOL'S OUT: Light out for your Juvenile Court or Family and Children's Service. You have a story to interest them a very distressing one, too.

M.M. Read Molly Mayfield's daily column in The Morning Call. The problems of others will make yours seem lighter. SUMMER ROMANCE WILTS DEAR MRS. MAYFIELD: My girl and I have been going steady all summer.

But about a week ago she told me she didn't want to go steady during school. This took me quite by surprise and I didn't know what to say or do. I asked her for her reasons. She said (1) she would lose friends at school if she went steady and (2) she wanted to date other boys. Molly, I've gone out with girls for several years and I've been out with all kinds, but I've never run into a problem like this before.

HIGHLY DISTURBED DEAR HIGHLY DISTURBED: I'd like to see her not want to gO steady because she wanted to study. But I expect that's asking too much. However, going steady all summer is pretty good rating, isn't it? And other summers will come. While you date other girls, give her to jump at school and maybe she'll not be SO jump rope, crazy, after all. M.M.

GENE BARRY GENE BARRY "The way I hear it," says Gene, seucuratos of west and wanted York very much to see Bat's gun. So as not to disappoint the fellow, Bat went and filed 23 notches in his Barry says the gun is on display in some museum somewhere.

Restless Kids Gene compares Bat in one way to the restless kids of today. "In Bat's day the restless kids ran away," he says. "Me, I ran away for a couple of hours. I'm a conformist. But Bat had to see what was going on.

He liked the trail towns, gambling saloons, Indian campaigns. And when the West calmed down, Bat came East and became a sports editor for the New York World Telegraph, was a speaking acquaintance of Theodore Roosevelt and died at the age of 67. You can see where we have a lot of territory to cover if we want to." Conformist Barry began his show business career as a baritone. He won a David Sarnoff music scholarship to the Chatham Square School of Music in New York, did live TV, then came to Hollywood in 1951 for such pictures as China Gate, Red Garters, Naked Alibi and his latest, Thunder Road. Gene has made a pretty good living out here and is just finishing the final touches on a big house for which he is as contractor.

As for the Rhett Butler of Tombstone, Bat has enough color to satisfy Barry who says he doesn't want to be just another gun slinger. "Bat may have dressed like an undertaker," says Barry, "but he knew how to live." Today's Television For complete program listings for week see the Call Chronicle Saturday in the WRCV-TV-Chan. One recurrent situation faced by declarer is the problem preventing a particular opponent from taking the lead because he may attack declarer in a suit where he is vulnerable. It will be noticed in this deal, for example, that if East can obtain the lead early enough play queen of hearts through South's king, declarer will wind up going down, because West has the ace of hearts.

Faced by this dangerous possibility as soon as the opening lead is made, South' should attempt his play taking so the that lead the is chance shape East's duced to a mimimum. There are enough tricks available for declarer to make the contract provided the danger hand (East) is neutralized. And this can be accomplished by careful management the play. How long has William Holden been acting in motion pictures? G.S. A. Mr. Holden made his screen debut in 1939, playing the role of the boxer -violinist in motion picture adaptation of Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy." Q. Who said, "What you do speaks so loud that I can not hear what you say?" C.M.

A. This is a paraphrase of a sentence in Emerson's "Socially HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA ...508... lead. This one stroke assures the success of the contract. Suppose West continues with another diamond.

Declarer takes the ace, draws three rounds of trumps, cashes the ace of clubs, and leads the queen of clubs. If East has the club king, it is trapped. If he covers, South trumps, ruffs a diamond in dummy, and cashes the J-10 of clubs. Or if East does not cover, South discards a heart of the club queen and then leads the jack through East. If it turns out West has the king of clubs, the play is equally effective.

Declarer discards a heart on the queen of clubs. West takes the second trick. But he cannot defeat contract. If he leads a heart, the hand is lover, and if he leads anything the J-10 of clubs come into their own. Suppose, though, that declarer tries the same line of play after having won the queen of diamonds on the opening lead.

He is defeated because when West takes the king of clubs he can put East in with the king of diamonds for the murderous heart return. By ducking the opening lead South effectively breaks East West communications.
