The Democratic governor-elect, in an interview with The Daily Journal of Elizabeth, said the many fronts from which Nixon is now being attacked and the increasing questioning of his credibility has made it virtually impossible for him to run the federal government. "We are now spending so much time on the Watergate issue, the Nixon issue, the income tax issue that it has become very hard to run the government," Byrne said.

During his gubernatorial campaign, Byrne shied away from comments about Watergate and related matters. His only significant remark in that area came on Oct. 25, when he told a Jersey City audience: "The simple fact is that Richard Nixon's action brought us to the brink of a total qijy hiiiiiiii iht" i- wrwirn wmn 111 in wnwagwinwiiiiii imrr i i miii i i Crash Darkens Several Homes collapse of our government." It was not known what affect if any Byrne's remarks would have on Rep. Peter W. Rodino, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, which is considering the possibility of impeachment proceedings against Nixon.

Rodino played a key role in Byrne's campaign. Because of increasing operational costs and other economic factors affecting New Jersey Bell, the Board of Public Utility Commissioners has issued an order permitting, on the average, a 2.64 rate change affecting all aspects of intrastate telephone service. For example: Basic monthly charges for residence service will increase by 90 to 180. For instance, individual line flat rate service in Egg Harbor will increase from $4.40 to $4.52, while the same class of service in Hacken-sack will increase from $6.85 to $7.03. See Chart A for new rates by rate groups. Monthly charges for optional residence equipment and services will be increased.

For instance: a Trim-line phone from $1.10 to Touch-Tone Service from $1.50 to an extension phone from 950 to 980. Comparable changes will be made in business rates including those for Centrex service, PBX, cord intercept, WATS, mileage service, mobile phones, Telpak and hardware for data and teletypewriter service. Initial period charges for direct-dialed intrastate toll calls and coin calls of 200 or more will be increased by 10 or 20, and some overtime charges will be increased by 10. Operator-serviced calls will increase by 1 0 to 40. There will be no change in rates for calls to other states.

See Chart for details. For customers billed on a message rate basis, the new charge for additional message units will be 6.30. Charges will also increase for Selective Calling and Econo-Pak service. Installation andor moving charges for residence customers will be increased from $15.00 to $15.40. For business customers, the charge to connect new service will go from $20.00 to $20.53.

This moderate rate adjustment should help us overcome some of the continually increasing costs of providing good telephone service. The cost effect on your own phone bills will be offset somewhat by a reduction of the federal excise tax on this service from 9 to 8, also on January 1, 1974. Further information on these rate changes may be obtained from your local Telephone Business Office or Business Service Center. The new rates will also be on file with the New Jersey Board of Public Utility Commissioners. Local Securities Listed Last Bid American Tel.
