Brown concluded his career with 150 yards on 32 carries, and became South Jersey's all-time single season rusher, breaking the 2,000 yard barrier during the 1983 campaign. Ross piled up 152 yards on 14 carries and ran for touchdowns of 22, 83, and 13 yards. Defensive end David Payne led Salems' tough defensive performance. Payne recovered three Hammonton fumbles, including one resulting in a touchdown. Late in the second quarter the Blue Devils were clinging to a 7-6 advantage, and driving for a potential score on the Rams' 11-yard line.

Quarterback Anthony Monzo attempted a lateral, but Payne was right there to snag it out of the air, and race 84 yards for the go-ahead touchdown to make the score 12-7. "He had an outstanding game. He had a football players dream today," said Whitzell. Salem closed the first-half scoring with a Donald Haynes 25-yard field goal to provide a 15-7 cushion, and what proved to be the winning points. The Salem Rams dominated the second half of play.

Hammonton, 10-0 entering the game, fumbled the kickoff over to Salem on the Blue Devils' 25-yard line. On a second-and-down situation at the 22-yard line, Ross dashed into the endzone. Haynes added the extra point and Salem upped its lead to 22-7. Whitzell said, "We knew we were going to break Michael." According to Whitzell, the key to Ross' shining performance had been because Hammontons defense had keyed on Brown. Hammonton coach Bruce Laz-aruk said turnovers crippled the Blue Devils.

"If we had half the amount of turnovers, or if we had been able to pick and choose the turnovers, then this would have been a ball game. We didn't play our kind of football," concluded Lazaruk. Hammonton turned over the ball seven times. Another fumble set up Ross' second touchdown, after the Blue Devils again were marching to score. Payne recovered a loose ball on Salems' 10-yard line.

Two plays later, from the 17, Ross found daylight and ate up 83 yards before hitting paydirt. Salems' final tally occurred with 5:05 remaining in the game. The Rams marched 62 yards on 12 plays. Ross capped the series with a 13-yard touchdown run. Whitzell, reflecting on Salem's accomplishment, calmly expressed the meaning of the Rams victory.

Woodruff, a second-year player from Fresno State, lost the start-, lng job he'd earned three weeks ago. So, it was as a substitute that Woodruff caught a 29-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds remaining to give the Eagles a 13-9 triumph over the Los Angeles Rams.

The victory ended a seven-game Eagles' losing streak and dropped the Rams into a tie with the San Francisco 49ers for first place In the National Football League's National Conference West. Los Angeles and the 49ers each have 8-6 records with two games to play. The Rams meet New England away and New Orleans home, while San Francisco closes out with Buffalo and Dallas. The Eagles, winning their first home in seven games, boosted their record to 5-9. Woodruff, who was demoted because he dropped several passes in the previous two games, beat Rams' cornerback LeRoy Irvin on the game-winning play.

"It was a split-second tussle," said a Jubilant Woodruff. "Irvin had the ball in his hands first." Woodruff continued: "He (Irvin) jumped sooner than I did. I just tried to get up high. I saw the ball coming. We both came down and I just took it from him." A disconsolate Irvin lamented: "I had the ball In both hands, but he got it away from me.

He made the play and I didn't." Woodruff said he tried not to let returning to the bench bother him. "If a player's got any heart, this kind of game will stick in his mind for a long time," Bird said Sunday night after the Philadelphia 76ers rallied for a 121-114 overtime victory over the Celtics.

"We had them down by 15 (in the second period) and should have taken them out of the game then," Bird said. "Instead of playing aggressive in the second half, we played like we didn't want to lose. "1 Everyone is disappointed the way we lost it. "It hurts when you lose one like this." After trailing 29-16 at the end of the first period, the 76ers out-scored Boston in every period after that 30-24, 28-24, 26-23, and, finally, 21-14 in overtime. (Continued on Page 20, Col.

-MICHAEL SMITH km PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia Flyers ended a triumphant road trip, only to watch the Hartford Whalers break two third-period ties for their first victory at the Spectrum. "It happens a lot that you come off a road trip that is successful and stink the place out. We certainly did that," Flyers' Coach Bob McCammon said Sunday night after the Whalers beat Philadelphia 6-5 in National Hockey League action. The Flyers were undefeated with three victories and a tie on their road trip, which ended Saturday night in Pittsburgh. The Whalers' victory, which came on a goal by Ray Neufeld at 12:52, also represented the first time Hartford has come out with a .500 record this late in the season.

"To come into this building and win is really an accomplishment," Hartford Coach Jack Evans said. "I know a lot of other teams would like to be in our position tonight." "It's not only good in the standings, but it's good for our morale," Evans said.
